Hurricanes Win at FIU’s Dual-a-Palooza; Day 1- Miami-Fla vs. FAU

The Miami-Fla Hurricanes came out on top when they faced off against Florida Atlantic University yesterday, winning 149-72. This meet was part of the first session of  FIU’s Dual-a-Palooza, which features four teams (FIU, Rice, FAU, Miami-Fla) that compete simultaneously in three separate sessions. Scoring is in a straight head-to-head dual meet format.

The Hurricanes finished first in each event that was contested in the meet  yesterday. Florida native, Cameron Davis, was one of two double event winners. She captured wins in the distance free events finishing her 500 in 5:00.63 and 1000 in 10:26.24. The marketing major was an ACC finalist last year as a sophomore in the distance free events. Fellow junior and other double event winner was Angela Algee,  took top honors in the 200 IM (2:08.76) and 100 fly (55.78).  Algee is a member of the school record holding 200 free relay and attained a NCAA “B” cut last season in the 100 fly. Last night, she also anchored the women’s 100 free relay relay with teammates Ksenia Yuskova, Julie Suarez, and Rebeka Repman (45.25).

Other standout first place performances for the Hurricanes included:

  • Christina Leander- 200 back (2:01.83), 50 back (26.57).  Leander is a Junior transfer from the Tennessee Volunteers- where she was a previous NCAA qualifier.
  • Repman- 50 free (24.48),100 free (52.37).
  • Julia Schippert- 200 breast (2:23.19)

The Hurricane divers, Carolyn Chanes, Kara McCormack, Wallace Layland, and Marcela Maric also took the top four places in the 1 meter dive.

 

FAU’s Abbey King took second place honors in both the 500 and 1000 free. Meanwhile, Agi Bucz took second place in the 50 and 100 free. The Hungarian senior also swam the butterfly leg of the second place 400 medley relay. Bucz was the only FAU swimmer last year to qualify for and attend NCAA’s. She is also the C-USA defending champion in the 100 free and 200 free and was named FAU’s Female Athlete of the Year last year.

The next phase of the Dual-a-Palooza kicks off at 10am Saturday. Miami-Fla will face off against Rice, while FAU takes on host FIU.
