Hosszu Nominated ESPY Award

USC swimmer, who will be a senior next season, has been nominated for an ESPY, which is ESPN’s version of the Academy Awards. She is a candidate in the “Best Female College Athlete” category, which is a title that she is certainly worthy of.

The other candidates are Penn State volleyball player Blair Brown, Arizona State softball player Dallas Escobedo, Notre Dame soccer player Melissa Henderson, and UConn basketball player Maya More.

Other swimmers nominated for ESPY are US Paralympians Melissa Stockwell and Mallory Weggemann in the Female Athlete with a Disability category.

USC’s Katinka Hosszu, a three-time NCAA and Pac-10 Champion as a 2011 junior and a five-time All-American, has been nominated for an ESPY in the category of Best Female College Athlete, ESPN announced Friday (June 24).

The ESPY’s will take place on July 13 at the Nokia Theater in downtown L.A. Information for online voting is at the bottom of this story.

Hosszu, who won the prestigious Honda Sports Award for swimming, given to the NCAA’s top female swimmer, was the only swimmer to win three titles at this year’s NCAA Championships, capturing the 200y IM, 400y IM and 200y fly.

She set an NCAA meet record in the 400y IM and led the Trojans to a third-place finish at the meet, its best since 2003. She was named Swimmer of the Meet at the NCAA as well as at the Pac-10 Championships, where she won the same three titles (200 IM, 400 IM, 200 fly).

She was a five-time 2011 All-American, adding the 400y medley and 800-yard free relays at the NCAAs, giving her 13 career All-American honors.

Hosszu, from Hungary, is a two-time Olympian (2004, 2008) and won a gold medal in the 400m IM at the 2009 World Championships and earned bronze medals in the 200m IM and the 200m fly.

Fans can vote for the ESPY’s online at espn.com/espys or on the ESPN facebook page at facebook.com/espn
