Fishback Does the Numbers: Michigan Did What They Needed To Do This Morning

by SwimSwam 0

March 30th, 2013 College, News

Arizona professor of economics goes hard when he’s Swim Geeking. Below, he shows where all of the numbers fall for the final day of competition at the 2013 Men’s NCAA Championship meet.

Michigan did what it had to do to win the meet.  They qualified to score 145 points if they swim to seed tonight.  This is a 19-point increase over the psych seedings. Cal moved up relative to the psych again by 25 points but not enough to close the gap.

The big gainers relative to the psych sheet this morning  were:

The table below is ranked by the predicted final score based on Friday night’s score plus seedings after prelim this morning.   There is a strong battle for the Wood with Florida, Arizona, Southern Cal, Texas and Stanford in the hunt.  Diving this afternoon and evening will have a strong effect.

Among this group Arizona has a platform diver, Rafael Quintero, who was second on the platform at Zone E.  Stanford has three platform divers.  Kristian Ipsen won both the 1m and 3meter events here and won the Zone E platform.  Taylor Shisc was third in the Zone E platform event.

Texas has Will Chandler who was second at his zone meet.

Auburn appears to be locked into 8th, Indiana 9th, and Georgia 10th.    Indiana has three platform entrants who went 1, 2, 3 at their zone meet, and Indiana divers have scored 38 points thus far.  Auburn has one, who was fourth at the zone and has scored 11 points so far.

Here’s how we expect the scores to go after each event tonight. It doesn’t look like Cal will ever get close enough to even give their fans hope, though they could be within 40 after the 200 breaststroke, and this should be a runaway by the time the relay comes around. That means even a DQ wouldn’t derail the Wolverines.
