The first night of the 2017 spring Sectionals meet in Buffalo, New York was a pure distance day with timed finals of the non-Olympic distance events. That is to say, the women’s 1500 and the men’s 800
Youth was served on the women’s side, with 6 of the top 7 finishers being aged 15-or younger. That was led by Madelyn Donohoe of FISH in 16:59.84 – a win by more than 45 seconds.
13-year old Natalia Rongione, younger sister of National Age Group Record holder Isabella, placed 5th, and FISH overall had 4 of the top 9 finishers in the event. The program is known as a distance hub, having produced swimmers like the elder Rongione and American Record holder in the 1500 SCM freestyle Kate Ziegler.
The men’s 800 saw a relatively more-veteran crew, with 18-year old Cardinal and Gold Aquatics’ Abel Sapirstein winning in 8:46.66. That’s a 9-second improvement over his previous best time. 15-year old Zacharia Reid was just behind him in 8:49.39, and another FISH distance swimmer Mason Greenblatt touched 3rd in 8:50.32.
Dear SwimSwam : SCM, SCY, LCM? Wasn’t the course in Buffalo LCM, and wasn’t the Zeigler record also in LCM? The headline has the course as SCY, and Zeigler record as SCM?
He works well with the young girls of the group. Thank you coach!
Wowza bobowza those Fish kids must be actual fish! Very impressive! Mahdelin Dahnohu is leading the pack of America’s next great distance swimmers! 16:59?!?Immaculate!
When you are willing to give pre-teens 10,000 yard plus practices you can create a lot of great 13 year old distance swimmers . . .
Dear D3daddy,
Pre-teens? More like queen-teens! These kids can handle anything thrown at them! Even a water bottle! Check your facts!
