The final day of competition at the 2023 Irish Open Championships saw Mona McSharry secure her trifecta of victories in the women’s breaststroke discipline.
Stopping the clock in a time of 2:25.70, 23-year-old McSharry topped the 200m breast podium. Splitting 1:09.60/1:16.10, the University of Tennessee swimmer produced a time quick enough to dip under the World Championships qualification mark. The ‘A’ standard sits at 2:25.91.
Her outing here checks in as the 5th fastest performance of her career, one which boasts a lifetime best of 2:25.08 from the prelims at the 2020 Olympic games.
McSharry is coming off of the NCAA Women’s Championships where she placed 16th in the 50y freestyle, 4th in the 200y breaststroke and 2nd in the 100y breaststroke.
On the heels of becoming Ireland’s first-ever man under the 22-second threshold in the 50m free, 25-year-old Tom Fannon captured the splash n’ dash title here.
Fannon earned the gold in a result of 22.02, just shy of the 21.95 he produced on the front half of the individual 100m freestyle race on day one of this competition.
The World Aquatics ‘A’ standard for Fukuoka is 22.12 which means Fannon’s time now qualifies him for the World Championships.
