TEMPE, Ariz. – The Indiana water polo team concluded their ASU Invitational schedule with two exhibition contests against the sixth-ranked Sun Devils. The games gave Indiana insight on their goals for their next two weeks of training for their next slate of games.
Indiana vs. Arizona State • January 24, 2016
Game 1 (11:05 a.m. ET): Arizona State 22, Indiana 8
In the first game of the day, Indiana saw five different Hoosiers enter the score sheet. Freshman Kate Pipkin continued where she left off on Saturday (three goals in their second game against Arizona State) by tying the scrimmage at 1-1 midway through the first period. Pipkin finished the game with two goals and a pair of steals.
Jordan Elwood and Sarah Young joined Pipkin as Hoosiers with multiple goals in the scrimmage. Emily Lowe and Karrie Kozokar followed with one goal apiece.
Bronwyn Smith led the Hoosiers in assists with two, followed by Lowe and Candyce Schroeder with one each. Schroeder also added two steals to her game statistics.
Indiana outscored Arizona State in the exhibition’s second period, 3-2. In that period, the Hoosiers fired three unanswered scores in the back of the cage from Elwood, Kozokar, and Pipkin, respectively.
Senior goalkeepers Mary Campbell and MacKenzie Bonk split time in the cage, playing 16 minutes each. The two combined for 11 saves in the first scrimmage.
Sarah Myers won two of the four sprints in the game, both in the second half.
Game 2 (3:00 p.m. ET): Arizona State 23, Indiana 4
The Hoosiers took the pool later in the day for a second exhibition against the Sun Devils. Kozokar led the way for Indiana, scoring back-to-back goals in the first period.
Hoosier centers Candyce Schroeder and Kaybree Albright each knocked in a score in the second half. Four Hoosiers—Pipkin, Myers, Sarah Young, and Kelly Matthews—received assist credit for Indiana’s four goals.
Like the previous scrimmage, Campbell and Bonk split their time in the cage down the middle. This time around, they combined for 13 saves.

The Hoosiers have two weeks in Bloomington to train for their next invitational, the 2016 Bruno Classic hosted by Brown University. Indiana will face three nationally ranked opponents, starting with No. 20 Wagner. The Seahawks are the only team amongst Indiana’s Bruno Classic competition with games under their belt, including an upset over No. 17 Long Beach State.
Indiana’s schedule will provide early-season looks at CWPA foes Brown and Harvard. The Bruno Classic games don’t count on their conference records, but they’ll help prepare for their future matchups (Harvard on April 9; Brown on April 16) in the CWPA season.
Indiana will conclude the invitational with a grudge match against No. 23 Marist. The Hoosiers and Red Foxes met in Bloomington at the beginning of the 2015 season, and Marist came away with a 9-8 win.
