Open water swimmers Kirill Abrosimov and Evgeny Drattsev are in Miami, Florida to begin preparations for the 2017 World Aquatics Championships.
“Now I am at the training camp in Miami, which is the first step in preparation for the World Championships in Budapest,” Abrosimov told Russian state-run new agency R-Sport. “The objectives of this phase is the development of high-speed abilities, improved technique and the development of aerobic capacity. We were able to implement this project in Miami by attracting private investments and funds from the Yaroslavl Region.”
The Russian pair are joined by their coach Irina Sergeevna and a professor from their University of Sports.
Abrosimov is the defending European Champion in the men’s 5km race, having finished 20 seconds ahead of his next-closest competitor in Hoorn last year. The veteran Drattsev has a total of 7 career World Championship medals in open water across all three major distances (5km, 10km, 25km). His most recent international success was by way of a silver and bronze at the 2014 European Championships in the 25km and 10km races, respectively.
Abosrimov has been chronicling the pair’s activities in Florida on his Instagram handle. Thus far, the two have spent time at the International Swimming Hall of Fame, and watching a Florida Panthers professional hockey game.
