YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University swim & dive team captured its third win of the 2024-25 season, topping the Oakland Golden Grizzlies, 161-139, at Jones Natatorium Thursday, Nov. 21.
The Eagles won both relay events and eight of 16 events overall to capture their first 3-1 start since the 2019-20 season, Head Coach Derek Perkins‘ first year at the helm of the program.
How it Happened
Eastern started the meet with a win in the 200y medley relay, as the team of Kiersten Russell (Clinton, Mich./Saline), Abby Szadorski (Oswego, Ill./Oswego East), Tristen Mina (Santa Clara, Calif./The King’s Academy), and Marlee Christie (Seminole, Fla./Seminole) swam to first place in 1:44.22, capturing 11 points for the Eagles. The time marked a season-fastest in the event for Eastern thus far.
Szadorski’s win in the medley relay was just one of her three on the day, as the senior captured victories in the 100y (1:04.87) and 200y (2:20.30) breaststroke events. She has swept the breaststroke events in three of EMU’s four meets this season. Additionally, the 100y breaststroke was swept by the Green and White. Following Szadorski in second place was Mina (1:06.62), with freshman Riess Estep (Smyrna, Ga./Whitefield Academy) in third (1:07.7).
Nehir Oz (Istanbul, Turkey/Cevre) earned the first event wins of her career with a personal-best 1:54.09 swim in the 200y freestyle to go with a first-place showing in the 500y freestyle (5:05.57).
Russel also had a strong meet as she played a role in both first-place relay teams, combined with second-place swims in the 100y backstroke (56.78) and 500y freestyle (5:08.47).
In the diving events, Malia Maire (San Luis Obispo, Calif./San Luis Obispo) and Rebekah Knapp (Mesa, Ariz./Skyline) shined, as both earned NCAA Zone Diving Championships cuts in the 1m dive. Maire placed second with a career-high 270.45 points, while Knapp slotted third, posting 267.00. Knapp would tie her personal-best score in the 3m (317.25), collecting her second win in the event this season.
Eastern sealed the win with a first-place showing in the 400y freestyle relay. The team of Emma Littrell (Taylor Mill, Ky./St. Henry District), Lucy Noble (Flagler Beach, Fla./Flagler Palm Coast), Sophie Gatrall (Windsor, Ontario/Tecumseh Vista Academy), and Russell bested the Golden Grizzlies by nearly three seconds, finishing in 3:29.85.
The meet concluded in a 169-131 win for the Eagles.
