BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The University of Denver men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs earned seven event wins at the 2024 CSUB Sprint Classic on Friday inside the John S. Hillman Memorial Aquatic Center.
Denver’s women won the six-team event, while the Pioneer men finished second in a four-time field.

NCAA Zone Cuts

Event-by-Event Recap
In Friday’s diving events, Zyad Morsy earned his second NCAA Zone Cut of the season, pairing his 3-meter cut last week with a 1-meter cut this week, combining for a score of 300.75. Colin Breuer finished third with a score of 284.65. On the women’s side, Kaitlin Calvery finished third in the women’s 3-meter, recording a score of 239.80.
Denver opened the meet with a second-place finish in the women’s 200 medley relay as Ali Beay, Jessica Maeda, Ines Marin and Megan Lucyshyn combined for a time 1:44.91.
In the first distance swim of the weekend, Sabrina Rachjaibun, Nika Spehar and Paige Reilly completed a podium sweep in the 1000 free for the Pioneers, turning in times of 10:25.66, 10:29.53 and 10:30.77, respectively.
Denver’s men’s distance swimmers also swept the podium on Friday afternoon. Finn Holdredge reached the wall first in a time of 9:30.14, while Kieran Watson (9:36.91) and Joseph Purdy (9:38.34) rounded out the top three spots.
Beay led Denver’s women with a second-place finish in the 50 fly in the six-team field, clocking in at 25.50.
A couple of events later, Lilly Zippel and Izzy Burton recorded fourth and fifth place finishes in the women’s 100 back, turning in times of 57.46 and 57.98.
Denver’s men’s backstrokers put three in the top five in the 100. Dylan Wright led the Denver trio in third with a 50.45, followed by Quinn Collins’ time of 51.38 and Liam Simmons swim of 52.11.
The meet moved onto the breaststroke where Maeda and Zoe Lynch led the Pioneers with third (1:04.92) and fourth (1:04.98) place finishes in the 100, respectively.
Marin, Metuzals, Rachjaibun and Spehar combined to give Denver its first women’s relay win of the season as the quartet turned in a time of 7:33.63 in the 800 free relay. The Pioneer men’s group of Wright, Watson, Brandon Saeedi and Mes turned in a 6:48.76 to finish second.
Flipping right back to breaststroke, Maeda and Lynch finished fourth and fifth in the 50 to lead the Pioneers in the event.
Nico Morton earned a third-place finish for the Denver men and Purdy finished fifth in the men’s 50 breast.
Beay earned an event win for the Pios in the women’s 50 back, turning in a time of 26.45. Zippel finished third in 26.76.
Wright won the Denver men its third event of the afternoon with a 23.63 in the 50 back. Simmons finished third in 23.86 and Collins took fourth.
Marin led Denver in the women’s 100 fly on Friday, reaching the wall in 56.64 to take second.
Hamish McLellan led the Denver men in the 100 fly with a fourth-place time of 49.68. Brandon Chapman tied for fifth with a time of 50.42.
Zippel earned a Pios event victory in the women’s 200 IM, reaching the wall in 2:06.81. Rachjaibun, Burton and Maeda earned spots 4-6 to score points for the Pioneers. On the men’s side, Morton finished third in 1:52.50 and Marco Nosack took fourth in 1:54.81.

Denver will stay in Bakersfield tomorrow to take part in the 2024 Roadrunner Invite. First swim is set for 11 a.m. MT.
The Pioneers will open their home calendar on Saturday, October 19, when Denver hosts Washington State and Air Force (Swimming 11 a.m./Diving 3:30 p.m.).

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – UC Santa Barbara Men’s and Women’s Swim faced competition from seven other schools during day one of the Bakersfield Invite. The men lead second-place Denver by 33 points heading into the competition tomorrow. The women are in second place – trailing Denver. They look to surpass the Pioneers’ margin of 12.5 points tomorrow.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Kyle Brill had an outstanding start to the Bakersfield Invite. Individually he captured the 50 breaststroke (25.02), and his winning time in the 200 IM (1:46.90) is good for sixth all-time by a Gaucho. His victory in the 800 freestyle relay (6:49.25) was complemented by splits from Austin Sparrow, Elek Zettle, and Mason Wendler. The Gauchos’ time in this event was better than second place by over five seconds.
Samantha Banos’s Friday for the Blue and Gold was also notable. The Los Alamitos native took the 50 butterfly (25.40) as well as the 100 butterfly (55.64). She was joined by Hazel Derr, Miranda Stevenson, and Sophia Hook as victors in the 200 medley relay (1:44.30).
The Gauchos took first in numerous other events to kick off the Bakersfield Invite. Ashley Ray swept the breaststroke events with a time of 28.99 in the 50 and 1:03.07 in the 100. Senior, Austin Sparrow showed out by winning the 100 breaststroke (55.18) and 200 medley relay (1:31.92) – along with Matt Driscoll, Bryden Thielenhaus, and Zachary Tamusaitis. Finally, Taisei Saito nabbed the 100 backstroke for Santa Barbara with his time of 50.03.
Looking ahead to day two: the men’s team has currently won six events, with the women earning five.

UC Santa Barbara returns to competition tomorrow, Oct. 12 at 10 am. The Gauchos hope to build off today’s strong performance in Bakersfield.
