Die Olympiasiegerin über 50 m Freistil der Olympischen Spiele 2016, Pernille Blume, hat auf den sozialen Medien ihren Rücktritt vom Leistungssport erklärt. Die 28-Jährige gewann neben Gold noch Bronze mit der 4×100 m Lagenstaffel in Rio und Bronze über 50 m Freistil in Tokio. Sehr erfolgreich war die Dänin mit diversen Staffeln bei Welt- und Europameisterschaften auf der Lang- und Kurzbahn.

I have some news to share with you.
I’ve decided to retire from competitive swimming 
It has been a long journey coming to my decision and it has been some somewhat an emotional ride. Although it is hard and difficult to say goodbye to something I love so much, then it is also equally exciting and thrilling to think about a new chapter is about to unfold in my life.
I don’t know yet how this new chapter will look like, but I’m taking the plunge and believing life’s got me and I will find my way to something meaningful and exciting just like swimming has been to me.
I’m so grateful for everything swimming has taught me, for the people who helped me achieve my wildest dreams, for meeting people across the globe and making friends, for learning to dream big, for getting to know myself even better and for all the incredible experiences I had throughout the years.
Swimming will always have a special place in my heart and I will follow the world of swimming closely, but this time from the pool deck.

Blume unterzog sich Anfang 2019 einer Herzoperation, um ein kleines Loch schließen zu lassen. Die Operation war erfolgreich und soll das Risiko von Blutgerinnseln und Herzstillstand verringern.
Im Jahr 2021 gab sie ihre Verlobung mit dem französischen Olympiasieger Florent Manaudou bekannt. Ursprünglich wurde Blume in das dänische Aufgebot für die FINA-Weltmeisterschaften 2022 in Budapest berufen, doch sie lehnte ab. Seit den Olympischen Spielen in Tokio teilte sie auf den sozialen Medien, dasss sie Yogakurse genommen hat, die gemeinsame Wohnung mit ihrem Verlobten in Marseille renovierte und sie ist in Dänemark als Testimonial begehrt.
Sie beendet ihre Karriere als drittschnellste 50 m Freistilschwimmerin (50 m Bahn) in der ewigen Weltbestenliste. Ihre Bestzeit von 23,75 von den Europameisterschaften 2018 liegt nur hinter der Weltrekordhalterin Sarah Sjöström aus Schweden (23,67) und Britta Steffens 23,73 von 2009.
