Citing Missy & Regan as Idols, Claire Curzan Reflects on 200 Back American Record

2025 NCAA Division I Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships

Claire Curzan grew up watching Missy Franklin and then Regan Smith dominate American women’s backstroke. Now, as a sophomore at Virginia, she has broken the record that both swimmers once held in their career, winning the NCAA title in 1:46.82, a new American record. Curzan reflects on what it has meant to her to transition into being one of the best backstrokers in the country.

I NEED to see a CC long course 200 free. I feel like with her endurance she’s built up for the 2 free it could be her next good chance at an international team. Obviously her and Todd know her capabilities better, but I feel good about the prospect.

Claire was such a clutch performer at this meet, always had something positive to say about her teammates, and will undoubtedly emerge as a team leader next year.

Yay Claire! Congratulations! Stanford folks please stop with the “if Claire’s points were at Stanford, blah blah blah”. If she stayed at Stanford she wouldn’t be swimming this fast.

hmmm your comment was the first I saw of someone saying if Claire’s points were at Stanford. I am sure there was a few, but of the thousands of comments I did not see any.

Stanford arguably had the best meet of all the teams, including UVA. So there’s definitely reason to believe in that she wouldn’t be swimming the times she did this week (or, at least faster than her 2023 meet) with how well Stanford has been swimming the past 1.5 years

Glad to see her happy. Not sure how you can downvote this. I guess being anonymous makes it easy.
