Cetus Espoo Destroys Finnish Men’s 4 x 100 Medley Relay Record

On the third night of the Finnish National Championships the Cetus Espoo relay team made up of Christoffer Fredrikson, Lassi Ohtonen, Tuomas Pokkinen and Ari-Pekka Liukkonen demolished the Finnish record in the men’s 4 x 100 medley by over five seconds. The four men registered a final time of 3:42.82 which betters the previous record of 3:48.17 that was set by Cetus Espoo in 2014.

  • Fredrikson – 56.96
  • Ohtonen – 1:03.40
  • Pokkinen – 53.64
  • Liukkonen – 48.82

The total time was impressive, but what may have been just as remarkable is the 48.82 that Liukkonen posted in his 100 freestyle split. It was only two days ago that Liukkonen set a new national mark in the event swimming a 49.44 beating Jani Sievinen‘s 21 year old record.

Before Thursday the fastest he swum gone is a 50.00, which he put up last March in a Grand Prix event.

He also took gold in the men’s 50 breaststroke in a time of 27.98.

Fredrikson collected an individual title in the men’s 50 backstroke winning the event in a time of 26.20 while Eetu Piiroinen won the men’s 400 freestyle in a time of 3:56.92. Piiroinen finished over 12 seconds ahead of the field.

In the women’s events Tessa Nurminen won the 50 freestyle in a time of 25.76. Finnish record holder Hanna-Maria Seppälaä was disqualified in the final after swimming a 26.17 in the prelims.

Mimosa Jallow, who won the 50 backstroke on Thursday, took the 100 backstroke in a time of 1:01.12 while Patricia Aschan collected gold in the 400 IM posting a time of 4:49.05.
