Seven top-five finishes highlighted the Carson-Newman swim teams’ third and final day at the Fall Frenzy at Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center in Charlotte, N.C.
Freshman Paul Ungur (Baie Mara, Romania), senior Stephen Parsons (Auburn, Ala.) and sophomore Tommy Bourgeois (Kingsport, Tenn.) are picked up second-places finishes.
The men’s team finished the meet in fourth-place while the women were eighth in the scoreboard.
“Quite impressive swimming this weekend for us. It truly humbles me to see how hard the athletes have trained and for them to see it pay off in this magnificent way across the board is fantastic,” coach Paige McCord said. “We want to give the glory to Christ for all he has blessed this team with, both in and out of the water.”
For the women’s team, freshman Margaret Stansberry led the team with a fourth-place finish in the 200 Back with a time of 2:03.19. But it was sophomore Amanda Henderson (Bartlett, Tenn.) was the swimmer who stole the show in the event. Henderson won the “B” final, which ultimately placed her ninth, and set a school record with at time of 2:02.19 in the process. Both swimmers set NCAA provisional times.
Freshman Samantha Starnes (Knoxville, Tenn.) set a school record in the 100 Free with a time 52.65 and set an NCAA provisional time. Starnes finished 14th in the event.
Sophomore Nancy Claire Smith’s (Franklin, Tenn.) 2:25.26 time placed her seventh in the 200 Breast and set a Carson-Newman school record.
Freshman Courtlyn Fields (Anderson, S.C.) placed eighth in the 200 Fly after finishing with a time of 2:12.89.
In the 400 Free Relay, the team of Stansberry, Starnes, senior Aly Kaywork (Fernandina Beach, Fla.) and sophomore Natalie Burnett (Sevierville, Tenn.) set a school record and a NCAA provisional time with a time of 3:31.50.
The lone men’s relay, the 400 Free Relay, won the program its first ever relay event at the Fall Frenzy. The team of sophomore Samuel Schechter (Knoxviile, Tenn.), Ungur, Young and Parsons set a school record with a time of 2:59.94 and set a NCAA provisional time. The four were the only relay team to break the three minute mark at the meet.
Ungur’s 1:45.19 set his second “A” time in two days and resulted in a second-place finish in the 200 Back. That time was a school record.
Parsons and senior Ben Young (Morristown, Tenn.) both placed on the podium in the 100 Free and both set NCAA provisional times. Parsons finished second with a new school record time of 45.12 and Young finished five-hundredths of a second later in third place with a 45.17 time.
Sophomore Kent Eldreth (Knoxville, Tenn.) set a Carson-Newman school record with a 2:01.99 time in the 200 Breast. He finished fifth in the event and set a NCAA provisional time.
Bourgeois finished second in the 200 Fly with a time of 1:53.01 and finished less than a second off the school record time.
The Eagles return to the water next calendar year on January 3rd at Cocoa Beach Winter Meet in Cocoa Beach, Fla.
