Both Siena and Stony Brook Break 1-Meter Dive Program Records in Dual Meet

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Stony Brook women’s swimming and diving team added another win to their 2021-22 campaign on Saturday against Siena. With the 133-108 defeat over Siena, the Seawolves improve to 2-1 on the season.

Redshirt junior Mia Sclar set a new female 1-meter dive program record with her score of 302.175. Mia destroyed the previous 19-year old program record of 269.10 that was set by Erin Byrnes in 2002. Sophomore Mary Kate Conway secured a pair of individual wins in 100 and 200 free.

Three Seawolves a part of the 1st place 400 medley relay also placed first in individual events. Sophomore Briana Liew was victorious in the 200 IM, sophomore Lara Youssef won the 100 fly, and junior Reagan MacDonald took first in the 100 back.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Stony Brook started the meet off with a bang as it won the 400 medley relay to get the action going. The relay team comprised of MacDonald, Liew, Youseff, and freshman Brenna McLaughlin recorded a final time of 4:01.27 to pick up the win.
  • Conway secured the only pair of individual wins for the Seawolves. She claimed first-place in the 100 and 200 free, touching the wall in 53.14 and 1:56.46 respectively. Mary Kate set new season personal bests in both events.
  • Liew was victorious in the 200 IM with a time of 2:15.75, in addition to the 400 medley relay win.
  • Youssef picked up a first-place finish in the 100 fly with her time of 58.99, crushing her previous season personal best of 59.62.
  • MacDonald rounded out the victorious 400 medley squad by touching the wall in 59.57 to take first in the 100 back.
  • Senior Jess Salmon finished off the day strong for the Seawolves by claiming a victory in the 100 breast with her time of 1:07.32, beating her previous season best of 1:07.49 against St. Francis Brooklyn.

The Stony Brook women’s swimming and diving team is back in action on December 3 at 7 p.m. when they travel to New Britain, Connecticut to compete in the Blue Devil Invite.

STONY BROOK, NY – Siena Swimming & Diving saw its first school record of the season fall Saturday morning, as the Saints trekked to Long Island for dual meet action at Stony Brook. Despite falling, 133-108, the program’s one-meter diving mark was set amid a flurry of best times and season bests.

Both Siena divers shared the spotlight during the meet, with junior Lydia Delano winning the three-meter diving event (302.47) and placing second in one-meter (295.27), while sophomore Talia Spenziero finished second in three-meter (294.97) and third in one-meter (282.87). Both one-meter marks surpassed the previous program record of 272.00 held by program diving great Hailey Beers since 2015, while all four marks were good for personal bests. Both divers also became the first Saints since Beers in 2015 to qualify for the NCAA Zone Diving Regionals, which will be held in Annapolis, Maryland in March.

The four diving collegiate bests highlighted 11 total best times swam by the Saints in their final dual meet action of the 2021 calendar year. Freshmen Maddie Buck and Kylie Carter continued to improve in mid-distance races, with Buck swimming new bests in the 200 free (2:00.59) and 500 free (5:25.92) with a second-place finish in the latter, while Carter finished second in the 200 free (1:58. 74) and also swam a personal mark in the 100 free (55.22). Sophomores Natalie Colaizzo and Emily Sulik swam best times in the 50 free (26.50) and 1000 free (11:30.63), respectively, while senior Isabel Harms swam a time of 11:38.79 in her first collegiate 1000 free time.

Siena also received top swims from upperclassmen Reilly King and Rory Kalac, with King winning the 500 free (5:17.36) and 1000 free (10:53.54) races and Kalac taking first in the 50 free (24.58) and second in the 100 free (53.77). Sophomore Demi Bobarakis finished second in the 100 butterfly (1:00.89), while the team of freshman Shaylea Triller, King, Carter, and Kalac won the 400 free relay to end the meet.

The Saints will take a week off before concluding the fall leg of their 2021-22 season by competing at the Blue Devil Invite in New Britain, Connecticut December 3-5.
