Ben Proud Tweaks Training, Breaks British Record in 50 Free in Time Trial Swim

British Swimmer Ben Proud has broken the 50 long course meter free British Record at a regional meet, swimming a 21.86 at an ASA South West regional meet on Monday. That broke Adam Brown’s 21.92 set at last year’s World Championships, and moves Proud up to 7th in the 2014 World Rankings.

This meet is actually a Youth Championship, meaning that the 19-year old Proud had to race in a time trial, but the result didn’t disappoint as he jumped his own personal best of 22.01 from the 2013 British Championships.

Proud told us after his swim that this is the time he wanted back in April at the British Commonwealth Games trials (he was only 22.31 – which wasn’t even a season-best for him). He toyed with his taper a little bit before the Glasgow championships, saying that he decided to cut out strength and conditioning earlier than usual, which “backfired” in his words.

This time, taking the advice of his new strength and conditioning coach Paris Payne (who Proud says he ignored before trials), things went much, much better for Proud, though he says he still wasn’t shaved nor tapered for this swim.

Proud is shooting for the Mare Nostrum series for his next big swims (Barcelona and Canet) in early June.
