Swim of the Week is brought to you by arena, a SwimSwam partner.
Disclaimer: Swim of the Week is not meant to be a conclusive selection of the best overall swim of the week, but rather one Featured Swim to be explored in deeper detail. The Swim of the Week is an opportunity to take a closer look at the context of one of the many fast swims this week, perhaps a swim that slipped through the cracks as others grabbed the headlines, or a race we didn’t get to examine as closely in the flood of weekly meets.
The Arizona State women have been on an absolute tear this season in the 200 medley relay, lowering the program record seemingly every time they hit the water.
Coming into the 2025 Women’s NCAA Championships as the 20th seed in the event, the Sun Devils figured to have a shot at scoring and placing in the top 16, but landing in the top eight and earning First Team All-American status looked a bit out of reach, at least on paper.
However, the quartet of Miriam Sheehan, Iza Adame, Julia Ullmann and Caroline Bentz did what they’ve done all season, break the school record and exceed expectations.
Sheehan, Adame, Ullmann and Bentz combined for a time of 1:34.54, earning them 8th-place in the nation on Wednesday night as they slashed more than a second off their previous school record of 1:35.63, set at last month’s Big 12 Championships.
Coming into the season, the program record in the 200 medley relay stood at 1:37.26, set in 2019, and they’ve now knocked 2.72 seconds off it throughout the 2024-25 campaign.

Sheehan broke 24 for the first time in the 50 back, Adame and Bentz had their fastest splits of the season come at NCAAs, and Ullmann was just seven one-hundredths shy of what she went last month at Big 12s on the butterfly leg.
With their 8th-place finish in the relay, ASU scored 22 points, having come into the meet projected to only score four for the entire competition based on the psych sheets.
It was the Sun Devils’ first top-eight finish in the event since 1989. Last season, they didn’t even qualify a team to compete in the event at NCAAs, with their fastest swim of the 2023-24 campaign coming in at 1:37.50 at Pac-12s.
Adame is the only relay member who swam for ASU last season (she wasn’t on the 200 medley relay at Pac-12s), and she’s taken a big step forward this year, while Sheehan (NC State) and Bentz (Virginia Tech) transferred over from the ACC and Ullmann is in her freshman year.
The Sun Devils continued to put points on the board on Thursday, as Bentz tied for 11th in the 50 free in a new school record of 21.65, and then they placed 15th in the 200 free relay to walk out of Day 2 in 17th place with 31.5 points, 27.5 more than they were projected to.
