“I am honored to be part of the inaugural class for the brand new program at University of Sioux Falls. Coach Jon has a great vision for the team and I am looking forward to being part of it. It will be fun to help build the program, traditions, and expectations for those who come after us!”

Allison Eppinga, of Saline, Michigan, has signed an NLI to swim for the University of Sioux Falls in South Dakota. Eppinga swims for Saline High School and Plymouth Canton Cruisers. Eppinga contributed to Saline’s second-place finish at the 2015 MHSAA Division 1 Girl’s State Meet with a pair of ninths in the 100 free (52.27) and 100 back (57.31), and stints on the Hornets’ 200 medley and 400 free relays.

In club swimming, Eppinga helped the Plymouth Canton Cruisers set the girls’ 15-16 Michigan record for the 400 medley relay in 2014 at the NCSA Junior Nationals. Eppinga suffered a sprained ankle last spring that cost her most of the summer long-course season, though, so she is just beginning to return to form again. Her top times are:

200 back 2:02.75 2:25.88
100 back 57.31 1:05.69
50 back 27.79 31.11
200 free 1:54.51 2:13.01
100 free 52.04 59.94
50 free 24.28 28.04

Filed in the Totally Random Swimming Facts file is Eppinga’s confession, “When I was in 8th grade, I asked my parents if I could get a pet rabbit if I went sub 52 seconds in the 100 free by the end of my freshman high school season. They agreed, knowing it would take a lot of work on my part but was an attainable goal (I was at 55 seconds at that point). During the very last event of the season -the 400 free relay at the State Championship meet that year- I swam 52.02 in my leg of the relay, bringing us from 5th into 1st position, helping us win the race. My parents said I met the spirit of the goal and I got the rabbit. I named him Flipturn and I still have him.”

Congratulations Allison and Jon.

My daughter had the honor of swimming for Jon at STAR Aquatics and for her first two years at Queens University of Charlotte. You’ve made a great choice for a coach.

See you at NCAA’s.
