Piedmont Swim Team (“PST”) Seeks a Head Age Group Coach 

The Piedmont Swim Team is looking for an energetic team player who loves to coach youth athletes and is motivated to help advance our swimmers and program to the next level. This position reports to the Head Coach of Piedmont Swim Team who is responsible for the daily operations of the Club.

Employment Status: Full-time

Essential Functions:

Team Administration:

  • Work closely with the Head Coach, Head Developmental Coach, and entire coaching staff to plan, develop and implement a comprehensive competitive program aimed at developing athletes ages 18 and younger.
  • Develop and implement a cohesive program for PST swimmers at USA Swimming’s American Development Model (ADM) Levels 3-4.
  • Attend monthly Zone 2 Board Meetings as PST’s representative. 
  • Manage various administrative aspects of PST’s Age Group Program. Examples include: approving timecards, employee scheduling, assigning volunteer jobs for age group swim meets, completing pre- and post-meet administrative tasks for age group meets, updating the PST website as needed.
  • Lead regular meetings and check-ins with PST’s Age Group program staff.
  • Work closely with the Head Coach to plan practice schedules, workouts and meet schedules to optimize athlete development for Age Group-level swimmers. 
  • Respond promptly to emails from PST parents of Age Group-level swimmers regarding various aspects of the team’s operations.
  • Maintain up-to-date performance reports on Age Group-level swimmers.

Supervision: 

  • Supervise Age Group Program staff (Gold and Silver level coaches) 
  • Assist Head Coach with supervision of Assistant Coaches and Junior Assistant Coaches

Coaching:

  • Conduct about 15-30 hours per week of on-deck coaching.
  • Incorporate goal setting into practice sessions.
  • Positively and constructively communicate and motivate swimmers with the ability to consider varied social, emotional and physical attributes.
  • Manage, observe, and constructively evaluate athlete performance at practices and meets to enhance technique and motivation.
  • Attend all scheduled swim meets, meetings, and team functions as required.
  • Perform seasonal and annual evaluations of swimmers.
  • Participate in mandatory continuing education and in-service training as required.
  • Cover practices for other PST coaches when necessary.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Board of Directors to aid in the efficient and safe operation of Piedmont Swim Team practices.

  • Knowledge of and expertise in: 
    • Current technical, training and motivational philosophies in swimming
    • First Aid, CPR, AED, and other lifesaving techniques
    • Competitive swimming and coaching at all age groups and senior levels
    • Teaching stroke mechanics
    • Dryland training and nutrition as it relates to swimming performance
    • Developing athletes, staff, and volunteers
    • Working with culturally diverse communities
  • Skills:
    • Demonstrates exceptional skill in the application of positive, consistent, and effective motivational strategies when working with swimmers, parents, and other coaching staff in relation to all aspects of the program
    • Demonstrates strong organizational skills and experience in management and/or oversight of swim team operations, including team billing, meet entries, registrations, on-site protocols, operational procedures, and safety policies
    • Demonstrates extensive knowledge of and ability to administer or use first aid, CPR, AED, and other lifesaving techniques
  • Ability to:
    • Demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills in English, including the ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, and successfully interact with athletes of all ages/abilities, families, staff, administrators and the PST Board
    • Demonstrate mature judgment, reliability, availability, and ethical behavior including punctuality, confidentiality, positive and constructive feedback, and ability to function in a multi-task environment
    • Work effectively with staff and swimmers at all levels, displaying a positive attitude, demonstrating presence and self-confidence, and exhibiting motivation and drive
    • Embrace a sound developmental philosophy that is in line with the growth mindset and values of the Piedmont Swim Team
    • Demonstrate enthusiasm for continuing coaching education

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Education: at minimum, high school or GED degree, bachelor’s degree preferred
  • Experience: 5+ years minimum competitive swim coaching experience preferred
  • Certificates:
    • Ability to meet all USA Swimming certification and coaching requirements before the start of employment
  • Must pass the following: 
    • USA Swimming background check
    • LiveScan Fingerprinting background check
    • Employment reference checks
    • Education verification
    • State motor vehicle report
    • Social media and internet checks
  • Must have legal rights to work in the United States.

Physical Requirements:

  • Be flexible, adaptable, and readily able to adjust to changes in the work environment
  • Have the ability to move and adjust lane lines
  • Have the ability to stand for extended periods of time
  • Be able to see swimmers’ stroke mechanics in the pool, and read a computer screen and printed material
  • Be able to hear and understand speech at normal levels, outdoors and on the telephone
  • Be able to speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly
  • Possess the physical agility to lift up to 25 pounds to shoulder height and 50 pounds to waist height
  • Have the ability to bend, stoop, sit on the floor, climb stairs, walk and reach overhead

Compensation: Piedmont Swim Team offers competitive compensation commensurate with experience and qualifications, within the range of $25-35 per hour. We offer access to comprehensive benefits programs.
