THURSDAY EVENING HEAT SHEETS
For those unfamiliar with swimming terminology, the concept of “Ups” and “Downs” is a good way to track which teams performed best at prelims. In prelims, swimmers qualify for one of three finals heats: the top 8 finishers make the A final, places 9 through 16 the B final and places 17 through 24 the C final. In finals, swimmers are locked into their respective final, meaning a swimmer in the B heat (spots 9-16) can only place as high as 9th or as low as 16th, even if they put up the fastest or slowest time of any heat in the final.
With that in mind, we’ll be tracking “Ups,” “Mids” and “Downs” after each prelims session. “Up” refers to swimmers and divers in the A final, “Mid” to B finalists, and “Down” to C finalists.
Team Scores After Day 1
- Yale – 120
- Princeton – 112
- (tie) Harvard / Cornell – 108
- –
- Brown – 100
- Columbia – 96
- Penn – 94
- Dartmouth – 90
Yale led the morning with 18 finalists but Princeton, with 16 scorers in tonight’s final, led the way with 9 in top-8 spots. The Tigers earned 2 places each in the 500 free, 200 IM, and 50 free but it was their divers who really shone: all three made the “A” final on the 1-meter board. Yale was up by 8 points over Princeton after Day 1 relays and should extend their lead to +18 tonight, given that they are the runaway favorites to win the 4×50 free relay.
The biggest jump in performances versus the psych sheet came from Columbia (+41), Dartmouth (+19), Penn (+18.5), and Cornell (+12). The other four teams were off, with Harvard leading at -48.5 points.
