The Indiana women’s swim team upset the 4-time defending champion Ohio State Buckeyes last week to win the Big Ten Championships. The 4-day meet came down to the last event, the 400 free relay, where Indiana touched 2nd and Ohio State touched 3rd, netting Indiana the victory by .5 points.
Indiana head coach Ray Looze spoke to SwimSwam and reflected on everything that went into the win, emphasizing that they just wanted a chance to win the meet when it got to the last event.

Why is it that SwimSwam won’t print the type of person he really is?
Was it when they cheered when Ohio State Dqd or was it when their parents threw things into other teams sections ?
This was a great interview. I am not the biggest Ray Looze fan, but this interview made me more of one. I appreciate how he was enjoying the process and the excitement of the situation as much as the fans were. This was an awesome story line for this meet, and I’m glad it was highlighted!

Great interview with plenty of insight into the meet and other areas of our sport. Congratulations Coach Looze, and the Hoosiers. Yes – we were entertained!!
With such a compelling story from the meet, this is the fun swim nerd stuff I love. Looking back on each little piece and how it all mattered. I’m really pleased with how much insight Ray gave into the team and their season leading up to this point.
There are a hundred little stories here on how what each swimmer or diver did to make a difference. I can only speak from the dive side. Ray and Drew took a chance on their roster and gave up 2 swim of the 18 total spots for 4 divers–including two unproven freshmen. Those two freshmen got into every final–one got into 1 A and 2 Bs; and the other 2 As and 1 B–which was not supposed to happen. Not only was it Skylar’s last flawless dive and unbelievable win by .40 that clawed IU back into possibly contending for the title, but it was the two freshman and the senior (two of those are definitely not tower divers) who… Read more »
Ray Looze said in a recent interview that the Chinese are “cheating their asses off.” I wonder if that applies to Skyler Liu as well.
