Zhang Yufei Posts 24.71 50 Fly For Chinese, Asian Records

2022 FINA SHORT COURSE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

As expected, tonight’s women’s 50m butterfly final at the 2022 FINA Short Course World Championships was a fast and furious affair.

American Torri Huske tied Canadian Maggie MacNeil for the top spot, with both simultaneously touching in a winning effort of 24.64.

Rounding out the top 3 finishers tonight, however, was Chinese ace Zhang Yufei. 24-year-old Zhang produced a time of 24,71, good enough not only for bronze but also for an Asian Record.

Zhang’s fastest SCM 50 fly time entering this meet rested at the 24.91 she logged at the 2021 edition of this competition. That rendered her the 5th place finisher in Abu Dhabi, so she upgraded herself two spots from last year to land on the podium tonight.

Her time of 24.71 now ties Japan’s Rikako Ikee as the Asian Record and overtakes Lu Ying‘s prior Chinese national standard of 25.14 that’s been on the books since 2012. Ikee posted her 24.71 effort in 2018 so Zhang represents the fastest Asian swimmer in 4 years.
