St. Xavier High School Head Coach Tim Beerman To Step Down From Powerhouse Post

After six seasons as head coach, Tim Beerman has decided to step away from his post at the St. Xavier high school swimming & diving team. According to WCPO News, upon prayer and discernment, Beerman came to the conclusion that it was time to let another coach take the reins.

Beerman leaves the team with an impressive resume, having led the boy’s team to 6 straight Ohio High School Athletic Association titles. Most recently, the St. Xavier boys swam their way to a decisive victory over the field, scoring 261.50 points to out-score runners up Upper Arlington by over 70 points.

2021 OHSAA Boys Team Titles – Top Ten

  1. St. Xavier – 261.50 Points
  2. Upper Arlington – 190 Points
  3. Cleveland St. Ignatius – 147 Points
  4. Mason – 145 Points
  5. Columbus St. Charles Prep – 135 Points
  6. Beavercreek – 127.5 Points
  7. North Canton Hoover – 121 Points
  8. Kings Mills Kings – 111 Points
  9. Powell Olentangy Liberty – 108 Points
  10. Toledo St. Francis de Sales – 94 Points

This is part of a run of 13-straight titles for the St. Xavier boys, a program that has one of the strongest high school swimming legacies in the country. In total, they’ve won 42 Ohio High School State Championships.

Following his team’s 2021 victory, Beerman discussed his pride for the team saying that “this season was filled with change and challenge. My heart and hat go out to them because they put in the work from Day 1 and knew it was an uphill struggle but they were ready to work and carry on the tradition that classes before them had passed on.”

Upon his retirement, Beerman shared the following:

“I would say what I most value are the relationships and connections with the students, the families and my fellow coaches all of whom have contributed incredibly to the success not only over the past six years but throughout St. X swimming and diving’s history.”

“I feel fortunate to be able to assist the program as the head coach for the past six years and if things are able to work out then hopefully I will remain connected to the program in the future as well.”

St. Xavier athletic director Brian Reinhart kind word about Beerman’s time at the school, saying that “Tim has done a tremendous job of keeping the tradition and the excellence in our swimming and diving program. “He truly cares about the formation of our young men. He built on the tradition that was handed to him and it will be handed on to the next person.”

Along with 6 straight titles, Beerman’s St. Xavier boys earned an honourable mention for both the 2016 and 2017 Swammy Award for High School Swim Team of the year. Among those high schoolers that Beerman coached that went on to succeed in the NCAA was 2017 high school graduate Grant House who went on to swim for Arizona State University. House represented ASU at NCAAs in his freshman (2018) and sophomore (2019) years, earning a 10th place finish in the 200 breast in 2019 along with contributing to the team’s 8th place 400 freestyle relay and 9th place 800 free relay.

Congrats to Tim! I don’t know him personally, but what a great program and tradition. I’ve met their former coach, Jim Brower, and have always been very impressed. His one of the classiest people in the business and maybe the most accomplished men’s high school coaches in history. Maybe he comes back and takes the helm?

I met him in the summer in Bloomington years ago when he was helping out with the Cincinnati Marlins. We went out to lunch and shared ideas and months later I went and watched practice at St. Xavier HS and talked to him. Coach Brower is still, to this day, the most selfless and humble of any coach that I’ve ever met. And the other thing that I observed when I was at practice was that nobody is more respected by their athletes and students as he is.

What about the rest of the St. X swimmers competing at the NCAA Championships? Justin Grender? Luke Sobolewski? I am sure I am missing more.

Coach Beerman was a great man and coached not only great swimmers that went on to the NCAA level but also GREAT PEOPLE who may not continue swimming in college, but always felt welcomed on the team.
