The women’s 100 breast was one of the quickest prelims sessions yesterday evening in Mission Viejo at the Pro Swim Series, and 17-year-old Lydia Jacoby became the newest member of the 1:06 club in the event.
Jacoby clocked a 1:06.99 to qualify second behind only World Record-holder Lilly King into today’s final, taking down her old personal best of 1:07.57. Her closing speed set her apart from the rest of the pack: out in 32.03, she came back with a 34.96– the only other woman to come back under 35 was King (34.90).
Among those Jacoby out-split on the back half were 200 breast Olympic team frontrunners Annie Lazor (35.46), Emily Escobedo (35.18) and Micah Sumrall (35.58). All three women will face-off with Jacoby and King again in today’s championship final.
Jacoby now ranks 13th in the world, and third among Americans (behind King and Lazor), this season.
The Texas commit’s swim also cracks the age group’s historical top ten, moving her to #5 in the 17-18 rankings despite being on the earlier side of the age group.
