BROOKLYN, N.Y. – LIU women’s swimming coach Matthew Donovan welcomed seven new members to his team this fall, their first season competing as the Sharks: Tara Cabiling, Aidan Condit, Reyna Iwamoto, Caitlyn Kanemitsu, Madison McCarthy, Gillian Pierce-But and Faith Sheinberg. They, along with transfers Emily Shoup and Maja Uduc, help make up the largest women’s swimming roster in the history of the young program.
“We’re so excited to have this group join us,” Donovan said. “Our two upperclassmen transfers, Emily, who joined us from Post, and Maja, who came from Grand Canyon University, will bring maturity and leadership to the team. And this group of seven freshmen should have an immediate impact. Several of them are already swimming times that would score at conference championships, and I can’t wait to see where they go from here. It’s going to be a great year to be a Shark!”
Tara Cabiling
Cabiling joins LIU from Palm Harbor, Florida, and is a breaststroke and IM specialist. A two-time team captain and high school record holder, she qualified for States every year, and was named the school’s Most Outstanding Female Swimmer all four of her years.
Aidan Condit
Condit fortifies the Montana contingent of the Sharks. A Missoula native and backstroke, she swam for Hellgate, helping them continue their six-year streak of state championships. A runner up in the 100 back at States three years in a row, she’s qualified for Senior Western Zones, Summer and Winter Northwest Senior Sectionals and Futures.
Reyna Iwamoto
The furthest Shark swam all the way from Honolulu, Hawaii, and appropriately, is a distance free specialist. Iwamoto competed for Pearl City Aquatics, and was a four-time Oahu Interscholastic Association finalist in both the 200 free and 500 free. She was also a medalist in four-straight Hawaii High School Athletic Association State Championships, and has been a Speedo Sectional competitor for the last four years.
Caitlyn Kanemitsu
Kanemitsu comes to Brooklyn from Diamond Bar, Calif., as a butterfly and freestylist. A four-time CIF qualifier and a three-time finalist, she also was a Cal State qualifier, and an NCSA Junior National Qualifier.
Madison McCarthy
Coming from Marietta, Georgia, McCarthy is a freestylist and a backstroker, and has placed in the top two in at Georgia state meets. She was also active in honors societies at her high school.
Gillian Pierce-But
A Witchita, Kansas native, Pierce-But is a high school All-American in the 200 free relay. A sprint free and flyer, she was a two-time city champion in the 200 free, a State Championship finalist in the 100 fly, and is a three-time Speedo Sectional Championship Qualifier.
Faith Sheinberg
Sheinberg hails from Oceanside, New York, where she was inducted into the Oceanside High School Hall of Fame. Specializing in butterfly and distance free, she’s a three-time state qualifier, and a member of both a 200 and 400 free relay team that won county championships.
The 2019-20 LIU women’s swimming season kicks off Friday, October 4, with the Brooklyn Invitational, a two-day tri-meet co-hosted with St. Francis Brooklyn, and featuring the newest member of the Northeast Conference, Merrimack.
