Seventeen-year-old Carson Foster, representing the Mason Manta Rays, took down his first world junior record Friday night in Palo Alto, taking second place in the 400 IM at the 2019 U.S. National Championships.
Foster went 4:13.39, taking .61 seconds off Sean Grieshop‘s previous record from June 2016; Grieshop, now 20, took fifth Friday in 4:15.50. Foster split 56.60/1:04.43/1:12.94/59.42 en route to his second-place finish.
After dropping about a second-and-a-half of his previous lifetime best time (4:14.73, from 2018 Jr. Pan Pacs) Foster is the No. 4 17-18 American performer in history, as FINA only began recognizing world junior records in March 2014. He’s still over four seconds off Michael Phelps‘ 16-year-old national age group record.

Foster led 19-year-old Bobby Finke by nearly two seconds after the breaststroke leg, but Finke, the 1500 champion earlier this week, came back and won the event in 4:13.15. Jake Foster, Carson’s 18-year-old brother, took third in 4:15.03. Both brothers are committed to the University of Texas.
Really puts into perspective Michael Phelp’s NAG record. Absolutely ridiculous to be 3 seconds ahead of the next fastest time for the age group.
