Filippo Megli Lowers Super-Suited Italian Record In 200 Free

2019 FINA WORLD AQUATICS CHAMPIONSHIPS

Filippo Megli took out a 10-year-old Italian Record in the semi-finals of the men’s 200 freestyle, clocking a time of 1:45.76 to lower Emiliano Brembilla‘s mark of 1:46.29 from the 2009 World Championships.

Megli came into the competition with a personal best time of 1:46.56 from the Italian Championships in April.

SPLIT COMPARISON

Comparing the splits of the old and new records, Brembilla was much quicker on the middle 100, but Megli managed to open and close a combined 1.31 seconds quicker.

The 22-year-old Megli snuck into the semi-finals in 15th after going 1:46.95 in the heats, and now he makes his way into tomorrow’s final in eighth place. Some of the favorites were left on the outside looking in, including Fernando Scheffer (9th, 1:45.83), James Guy (11th, 1:45.95), Kyle Chalmers (13th, 1:46.21), Townley Haas (14th, 1:46.37) and Andrew Seliskar (15th, 1:46.83).

At the 2017 World Championships, Megli placed 28th in the 200 free, and then followed up by placing fifth at the European Championships last year. He also picked up a silver on the Italian 800 free relay in Glasgow which was his first international medal.
