Our most recent poll asked SwimSwam readers to pick the most impressive record of the 2017 World Championships:

Question: Which world record in Budapest was most impressive?
- Sjostrom – 51.71 in 100 free – 42.2%
- Peaty – 25.95 in 50 breast – 37.8%
- Masse – 58.10 in 100 back – 5.5%
- King – 1:04.13 in 100 breast – 8.6%
- Sjostrom – 23.67 in 50 free – 4.6%
- King – 29.40 in 50 breast – 1.2%
SwimSwam voters narrowly picked Sarah Sjostrom‘s 100 free world record as more impressive than Adam Peaty‘s 50 breast world record.
The margin was about 4.4% of the votes, or just over 50 votes in all. Those two ran away with the top ranks, combining for 80% of the total votes cast.
When you factor in the 50 free, Sjostrom’s two records earned almost half of the votes. We didn’t include relay records in our poll, focusing only on individual swims.

Although Peaty’s time was mind blowing Sjostrom’s 100 Free World Record is the better swim especially given that it is the “blue ribbon” event and an Olympic event. Masse’s swim under pressure in a final was also phenomenal considering the number of talented people who got close but couldn’t break 58.12
As amazing as Dressel’s 100 fly was, how can a textile WR could possibly be better than an actual WR? Cate Campbell was only able to better Steffen’s super suit 100 WR by 0.01, whereas Sjostrom smashed it right through the 52 barrier and then added the 50 free WR as well. Sjostrom all the way, for either swim.
I always have to lean towards Olympic events- and the 100m is the blue ribbon sprint challenge…so SS it is.
Dressels 100 fly is more impressive than all of these
I would’ve voted for Dressel’s textile World Record 49.86 in the 100 fly.
Please no dislikes. Although the LZR was not like the Arena or Jaked suits, it still was much better than what Dressel had. Imo he is the first person to truly go sub 50, and this is someone coming from a huge Phelps fan
Swimmer?, Michael Phelps actually went under 50 in the 100 fly back in 2009 when he won the world championships.
Yeah, but in a LZR, is the point.
OMG, it’s not like those suits were PEDs. They were legal at the time — why wouldn’t the athletes wear them? People talk about those world records as if the people who swam them didn’t have to do anything to get those times. They were still training hard, they were still swimming fast. And everyone was wearing those suits so it was a level playing field. The rules changed, but that doesn’t negate what was done before and it doesn’t make today’s swims any less impressive. Y’all need to get over this obsession with textile world records.
I mean, I’ll paraphrase Bob Bowman: “It took me six years to get Michael from a 1:46 to a 1:42. Beiderman did in 8 months. I’d like to see that training program.”
