The U.S. Air Force Academy‘s sole swimmer at this meet, Genevieve Miller, won a grueling 500 free swim-off this morning against Texas freshman upstart Lauren Case. The two were neck-and-neck throughout the race, and it came down the the final 50.
The duo hit the wall at the 450 separated by only .01. Then Miller kicked it in to win the duel in 4:39.82. Her time in the second swim this morning was about a second off her best, a 4:38.98 from the 2017 Mountain West Conference Championships. Case was 4:40.06.
Tonight, Miller will take on a very tight B final; less than two seconds separated ninth from sixteenth this morning. Also swimming the B final tonight are Kaersten Meitz of Purdue, Megan Byrnes of Stanford, Becca Mann of USC, Geena Freriks of Kentucky, Lindsey Clary of Ohio State, Leah Stevens of Stanford, and Kira Zubar of Mizzou.
This meet marks Miller’s fourth and final NCAA Championships. She will also swim the 1650 this weekend, where she is ranked 13th with 15:58.06.
Great race! So happy for you and the Falcons.
Very gutsy swims for both ladies. From the times, it’s pretty clear that both of them fought every inch of the way, says a lot for their drive and mental toughness.
Way to go, Genevieve!! Go get em tonight!
Boom!
Swimming the 500 free 3 times in one day, ouch. Very impressive!!!
Respect.
Thank goodness Miller gets tomorrow off to recover! What a grueling day!
Way to go Genevieve!! Good luck this weekend!
