Seven More Athletes Secure Spots on the Brazilian Olympic Team

2016 MARIA LENK TROPHY OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS

There were seven names added to the Brazilian Olympic team on the final day of competition at the Maria Lenk Trophy.

Bruno Fratus and Italo Duarte came into the competition with the top two times from the Brazil Open where they both swam faster than the Olympic qualifying standard. After the prelims Cesar Cielo put himself in the mix swimming a 21.99 faster than the 22.08 that Duarte recorded at the Brazil Open. In the final Duarte earned his spot back finishing second to Fratus in a time of 21.82.

Cielo finished third in a time of 21.91.

Etiene Medeiros, who tied the Olympic qualifying time at the Brazil Open, secured a spot in the event with her performance on Wednesday evening. Her time of 24.64 was not far off her national record of 24.55 and places her just outside of the world’s top 10.

Although Loranne Cristina beat Graciele Herrmann and was under the qualifying standard Herrmann takes the spot on the team as Cristina was not able to beat her time of 24.92, which she put up at the Brazil Open.

Although Henrique Martins and Marcos Macedo do nothing on Wednesday night to place themselves on the Olympic team their times from the Brazil Open still remain the fastest in the men’s 100 butterfly. In December Martins posted a 52.14 while Macedo recorded a 52.17, both under the FINA A time of 52.36.

With an incredible final 100 meters Brandonn Cruz was almost able to catch Miguel Valente for the win in the men’s 1500 freestyle. More importantly than that Cruz’s final surge maybe what pushed both himself and Valente under the FINA ‘A’ Standard.

Valente won the event in a time of 15:14.40 followed by Cruz who hit the wall in a time of 15:14.58.

Going into the final 100 meters Valente had a lead of 4.71 seconds over Cruz. Cruz came home with a final 100 meters split of 57.63 (29.42/28.21).

The two pushed each other hard enough that they both snuck under the FINA ‘A’ Standard of 15:14.77 qualifying them for the Brazilian Olympic team.
