2024 SPEEDO SUMMER CHAMPIONSHIPS

DAY 3 PRELIMS HEAT SHEET

PREVIEW

It’s the first-morning session with three individual events for both genders, with the 400 Free, 100 Fly, and 200 Back on the schedule.

The 400 free looks to be the race of the morning on both sides as the top seeds are each NCAA champions. Bella Sims leads the way in the women’s 400. The Florida Gator, swimming unattached, is entered with a seed time of 4:03.25 but will have to hold off Jillian Cox, who finished 3rd in this event at Trials as well as Rachel Stege, who finished 13th. The pair are both entered in sub-4:07 times, so should they make the final, it’ll be a great duel between them.

On the men’s side, Jake Magahey leads the pack. The Georgia Bulldog finished 6th at Trials but will face tough competition from Rex Maurer, who finished 9th in the event in Indianapolis but also last night dropped a massive personal best of 4:13.17 to win the 400 IM.

The 100 fly should be a speedy affair, as spots in the top eight will be hard-fought. On the women’s side, the top three are all under a minute, led by Caroline Larsen‘s 58.78, but 4th through 12th are separated by less than half a second; expect some fast times this morning.

On the men’s side, Trenton Julian will look to double up on his butterfly wins after having won the 200 fly earlier in the meet. Looking to usurp him are Finn Brooks and Jack Dahlgren, with the pair filling the 2nd and 3rd seeds.

The morning concludes with the 200 backstroke. In the women’s side, one of the USA’s strongest and deepest events, top seed Torie Buerger will look to hold off 16-year-old Quinn White and 14-year-old Margaret Dickinson as the trio jostle for the middle lanes tonight.

Recent Indiana transfer Owen McDonald is the top seed in the men’s 200 backstroke and will look to carry that into tonight as his entry time is just one of two under the 2:00 barrier. Standing is his way is Sam Powe, who is seeded just .05 back.

SCRATCHES

In terms of seeding, the biggest scratch came in the 200 back, where the #3 seed, Rex Maurer, scratched. However, Maurer scratching isn’t that big of a surprise as he is also the #2 seed in this morning’s 400 free. Coincidentally, the #3 seed in the women’s 200 back has also decided to swim the 400 free instead. Elyse Heiser of Indiana Swim Club has opted to swim the 400, where she is the 14th seed.

The only other top 16 scratches on the morning come from the Women’s 400 free, where the 7th seed Mackenzie Hodges and the 16th seed Caroline Pennington have opted not to swim. Hodges will swim later on in the session, however, as she is also entered in the 200 back as the #8 seed.
