Katy, Texas mid-distance freestyler Alexander Smilenov has verbally committed to swim for Brown University’s Class of 2020, joining his club teammates from Power for Life Aquatics, twins Charles and William Steele. The Cinco Ranch High School senior was an “A” finalist in both the 100 free (fifth, 45.71) and 200 free (sixth, 1:39.61) at the 2015 Texas 6A State Championships.
“I am very excited to be part of Brown’s rising program. With the two new coaches and top-notch facility, I am confident that at Brown, I will be able to reach my max potential as a swimmer. After seeing the close-knit team and motivated atmosphere of the program on my recruiting trip, I knew that Brown was the place for me. Go Bears!” – Alex Smilenov
Smilenov’s best times include:
- 50 Free: 21.07
- 100 Free: 45.71
- 200 Free: 1:39.61
- 100 Fly: 51.44
- 100 Back: 51.84
He has also split 20.50 and 45.12 in the 50 and 100 freestyles from a relay start.
Smilenov has dropped 9/10 in the 100y free and 1.4 seconds in the 200y free over the last year. He stands 6’4” and has not yet incorporated any weight-lifting into his training, leading one to believe has a lot of untapped potential to hit throughout his four years at Brown.
*DISCLAIMER: Smilenov has not yet been officially accepted to Brown. As is true with all Ivy League schools, Brown’s Admission Office will not send its acceptance letter until the beginning of December, along with those of all Early Action candidates. The procedure for a recruited athlete like Smilenov is for Admissions to review his transcript and SAT scores, “support his application for admissions in the fall,” issue a Likely Letter, then offer him acceptance into the class of 2020.
