The Auburn Tigers have announced their 2015-2016 swimming & diving schedules for the men’s and women’s program, and they will kick off their dual meet schedule against arch-rivals Alabama.
Auburn began last season on the road in a dual meet against Indiana, and didn’t swim Alabama until NOvember, but this year, Brett Hawke’s squad opens on October 9th, on the road, against the Crimson Tide.
This rivalry was in a little bit of a lull for most of the 2000’s, but the return of Denis Pursely and Jonty Skinner to Tuscaloosa has revived it in the last two season. In 2015, Auburn was 9th at the NCAA Championships, and Alabama was 10th, just 6 points behind.
Auburn has a busy fall semester that will see them host the War Eagle Invitational a week later before rolling into a dual against Indiana, the back-half of the home-and-home from last year.
Auburn this year travels to the Georgia Invitational hosted by another SEC rival, which will be the only chance they’ll have at the Bulldogs in the regular season.
Coming out of the winter break, the Tigers will face a gauntlet in January. That includes a January 7th dual meet against the defending NCAA men’s champions from Texas (it will be a co-ed dual) in Austin. A week later, the women race Arkansas at home while the men take a break, but another week after that Auburn again hits the road to race the defending SEC men’s champions from Florida.
The month will close with a home tri-meet against Florida State and the Wisconsin Badgers, who have made a habit of scheduling high-powered out-of-conference meets to escape the cold winters of Madison.
Championship season kicks off from February 16th-20th at the SEC Championships in Columbia, Missouri at the University of Missouri. That’s the first time Missouri will host the SEC Championships, and the meet will again be in a 5-day format.
After a Last Chance meet, it’s off to Zone Diving in Atlanta, and back to the NCAA Championships hosted by Georgia Tech (for both men and women). Atlanta is just a quick 90 minute drive from Auburn, making the trip a relatively easy one.
The Auburn men finished 9th at last year’s NCAA Championship meet, while the women were 18th. While that 9th-place finish for the Auburn men was their lowest since 1992 (15th), it was also a 24th-straight top 10 placing.
The men’s and women’s teams were 3rd and 6th, respectively, at the 2015 SEC Championship meet.
