Update: After initial release, USA Swimming made one update to the National Team roster. The new roster is listed below. See here for more details.

USA Swimming has released their 2014-2015 U.S. National Team roster.

This team is selected from the top 6 athletes, in all Olympic events, from the 2014 U.S. National Championships and 2014 Pan Pac Championships results combined. Times from prelims and finals (A, B, or C) were all considered, but relay lead-offs, time trials, and swim-offs were not.

Among the highlights include Michael Phelps’ return after a hiatus from the 2013-2014 team. Phelps officially made the team in four events: the 100 free, the 100 back, the 100 fly, and the 200 IM.

Stay tuned to SwimSwam.com for several scheduled follow-up articles breaking down the 2014-2015 U.S. National Team.

I’ve been searching for the WUG roster and it doesn’t seem to be anywhere. Why is this? The selections have been made as I have a former age-grouper who was selected and wanted to see if other swimmers I know will be representing at the WUGs. Announcements for PanAms, which are one tier lower, doesn’t make a whole lot of sense.

DanJohnRob,

I agree, except that WUG is priority 1, and then priority 2 is Pan Ams. WUG folks aren’t eligible for Pan Ams.

Gator, Thanks! I actually know almost nothing about the selection process for World U Games or Pan Am Games Teams, I was just trying to explain why the National Team is so large to answer David S’s question, and to give him an explanation for why the “top 6 per event” number was chosen. I guess I should have been more clear that my example was only hypothetical, but I appreciate that you took the time to help us both understand better!

David S, The World Championships Team consists of only 2 entrants per event (not 2 swimmers per event because many athletes will be swimming multiple events) plus 4 additional entrants for each of the freestyle relays. I believe the max size is 26 women and 26 men, but I don’t think next years’ team is max size.

THIS list is made up of athletes who have qualified for the US National Team by placing 1-6 in the FINA rankings based upon their performances at Nationals/Pan Pac’s (thus Phelps qualified in the 100 back, based upon acieving the 5th ranked time by a US swimmer in Irvine).

National Team members may be eligible for financial support. They are also the pool… Read more ยป

the USA has many strong swimmers, and will continue to as we expand the base of swimming and involve more people into the sport- An ongoing challenge will be to educate parents. I actually had a kid pulled from practice on Tuesday (by his parent) for breathing hard? somehow, I think breathing hard is part of all sports. *and might even lead to developing some endurance.
I know Michael Phelps has had many practices with this feeling. -Maybe we need to educate our new parents better that yes, putting a child into any sport will put them under some physical stresses- and that is how they start cycles of improvement.

I’m just venting my frustration here, so I’m sorry to be so negative, but this system stinks! If USS only provides partial funding to college athletes and only provides funding to swimmers ranked in the top 12, then they aren’t supporting many athletes!

A LOT of the members chosen for the World Team aren’t in the top 12! Plus, the ones who ARE ranked that high are mostly college athletes on full scholarships or athletes like Phelps and Lochte with corporate sponsors! Geez, why not give the money primarily (ie other than travel expenses) to post-grads who are ranked top 6 in an event and struggling to remain in the sport instead of only people ranked top 12 whether… Read more ยป

Excellent points. I would like to see which athletes qualified for the stipend (top 12). USA swimming should go much deeper into the world rankings in my opinion and create tiers/levels of funding for athletes in the top 25 in the world.
Besides the select few ultra elite athletes (Lochte, Phelps, Missy), USA swimming does not support the ‘lower’ level national team athletes or its coaches.

Whats the benefit of being on the top 6 national team? What kind of support?

Athlete benefits depend on amateur status and world rankings:

There’s also another section about reimbursement of select meet expenses for National Team members here:

Yeah, I was wondering that myself. Need more of an explanation here. If you are #6 in the 50 free what does that get you?
