2016 SHORT COURSE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Last night long course 200m freestyle world record holder and former short course 200m freestyle world record holder Federica Pellegrini won her first short course world title in the 200m freestyle.

“I’m very happy for this final because it’s the first gold medal for me in the short course in 200 freestyle it’s amazing,” said Pellegrini.

Pellegrini managed to pass Hungarian swimmer Katinka Hosszu over the last 50-meters in order to secure the win with a time of 1:51.73.

“It’s my 50 meters the last 50 meters,” Pellegrini stated.

Pellegrini’s time was over half-a-second shy of her personal best time and Italian national record of 1:51.17 that she set in December of 2009 at the European Championships.

Hosszu ended up fading over the last 50-meters in order to finish second behind Pellegrini. Teenage Canadian Taylor Ruck managed to secure a spot on the podium in third in a new world junior record time.

After her win last night, Pellegrini will be in the second semifinal of the women’s 100m freestyle tonight after touching in at 53.05 this morning to claim the fifth seed overall.
