Virginia High School State Finalist Lauren Masters (2023) Commits To Old Dominion

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Lauren Masters of Winchester, Virginia, has committed to swim and study just four hours away from home at in-state Old Dominion University beginning in the fall of 2023.

“I’m ecstatic to announce my verbal commitment to continue my swimming and academic journey at Old Dominion University! It has been a goal of mine to swim at the Division 1 level since I dove in to swim my first race. I couldn’t be more grateful for this opportunity and I would like to thank all my amazing coaches, teammates, friends, and my family for pushing me to where I am today. Can’t wait to be a part of such an incredible team!! #ReignOn #Monarchs 🦁👑💙”

Masters is a senior at James Wood High School and competes year-round for Winchester Swim Team. As a primary freestyler and butterfly, Master’s best events are the 100-yard freestyle and the 100/200-yard butterfly. In the spring of 2022, she hit best times and placed fourth in the 50 free (24.09) and the 100 free (52.14) at the Virginia High School Class 4 State Championships.

Two weeks later at the Virginia Short Course Senior Championship, she swam best times in the 100-yard butterfly (56.94) and 200-yard freestyle (1:55.34) placing 18th and 33rd, respectively. In December, she set her 200-yard butterfly best time at the Virginia Rays Nutcracker Classic, winning the event in 2:09.69.

Best Times SCY:

  • 50 free — 24.09
  • 100 free — 52.14
  • 200 free — 1:55.34
  • 100 fly — 56.94
  • 200 fly — 2:09.69

Old Dominion placed 8th out of 11 teams at the 2023 Coastal Collegiate Sports Association Conference Championships. With her current best times, Masters would have scraped into finals in the 100-yard butterfly and 100-yard free, placing 24th in both. Her next highest-scoring event would have been 31st in the 200-yard fly.

Masters will be joining a strong butterfly group at Old Dominion; butterflyers Martina Ciriesi, Kiersten Donnelly, and Elin Sigurgeirsdottir scored a combined 110 points at the 2023 CCSA conference championships. Masters also has a genuine shot at an anchor leg position in the 400-yard medley relay: Master’s 100-yard free best time is about a half second faster than Summer Miln’s anchor leg of 52.56 on Old Dominion’s 2023 CCSA 400-yard medley relay.

Masters will be joining sprint freestyler Mallory Mackay, backstroker Ally Hilbrich, and distance freestyler/IMer Sophia Kapla for the Old Dominion class of 2027.
