Florian Wellbrock was born in 1997, at this time, German swimmer Jörg Hoffmann already has held the German National Record in the 1500m freestyle for six years and 21 more followed until Wellbrock bettered the record last Friday at the Swim Open in Stockholm.
He was clocked at 14:40,69 and improved Hoffmann’s record by more than 9 seconds. Florian Wellbrock also set a new 2018 world best time. Wellbrock’s previous all-time best before was 14:55,49.
Florian Wellbrock now is qualified for the 2018 European Championships in the 800m, 1500m freestyle and 400m freestyle.
He made it into the top ten of the all-time best performers in the 1500m freestyle, ranks on the 9th spot. And he is the third fastest European swimmer ever behind Olympic Champion Gregorio Paltrinieri (Italy) and Ukraine’s Mykhailo Romanchuk .
Wellbrock trains in Magdeburg, Germany, his coach is Bernd Berkhahn who also is the man behind the success of Franziska Hentke.
Florian Wellbrock also lowered the 800m freestyle record in Stockholm, he recorded a time of 7:46.85, knocking Christian Kubusch‘s 2010 mark of 7:49.12 off the books. Wellbrock’s previous best was a 7:50.89 from last year.
Wellbrock managed to swim nearly all 50m distances around 29 seconds and the second half of the 1500m was six seconds faster than the first one.
