Van Mathias swam to his 2nd American Record of the week, touching in a 58.01 in the 100 breaststroke. That broke the previous American and US Open Records of a 58.14 set by Michael Andrew from 2021. Mathias also broke his own Pro Series Record of a 58.32 that he swam this morning in prelims.

Earlier this week, Mathias broke his own American Record in the 50 breast, touching in a 26.30.

Mathias was faster in both 50s compared to both his own prelims swim as well as Andrew’s old American Record. His first 50 split was only 0.46 off his own American Record.

With his swim tonight, Mathias moves up to become the #4 performer all-time in the men’s 100 breast.

I find it interesting that the difference between Mathias’ 58.0 and McKean’s 58.9 is essentially the front half. 26.7 and 27.6. Both 31.2s on the end

Yes, once swimmers are on the roster they can swim as many individual events as they want.

Congrats Van (I just knew the discussion would skew toward MA)… If Murphy and/or Armstrong can get back to peak form, USA medley relay will be looking very strong… Whoever steps up on backstroke + Mathias + Kharun/Casas + Alexy/Guiliano
