Tyler Clary Scratches Day 2 of Charlotte Grand Prix, Swims in Triathlon

Tyler Clary was a no show in the 200 fly and 400 free this morning at the Charlotte Grand Prix.  While this is the Olympian’s first meet at his new home pool since joining SwimMAC, he dipped out of this morning’s session to participate in the Over The Mountain Triathlon.

Clary teamed up with NASCAR driver Jimmie Johnson to complete the race.  Clary stuck to his speciality and swam the 1.5K portion in Moss Lake in North Carolina.  Jimmie Johnson then took over to complete the 45K bike ride and 10K run.

In exchange for his help on the swimming portion, Clary will get to shadow Jimmie Johnson as he trains for the All-Star race.

Results weren’t available at the time of posting, but I’m sure Clary held his own through the open water swim in the lake.

Clary is slated to swim the 200 IM and 200 back at tomorrow’s prelim session so hopefully the open water swim didn’t take too much out of him and we’ll see him race some of his best events on Sunday.

I don’t think this happened. Clary might have been on a relay in this race, but it wasn’t on a relay with Jimmie Johnson. The associated press and the triathlon results claim Jimmie Johnson did the whole thing himself. And his swim split wasn’t that good. Age 35-39:

AP report actually has a picture of him getting out of the swim.

Swimming is the only professional sport I have ever seen where a participant can scratch unless sick or injured and not get fined; first Phelps then Clary. My brother was fined in a tennis tourney when he defaulted because bad weather put consecutive matches he had to play too close together. What do you tell the ticket holders that pay good money to see these people? And the kids that want the autographs? Too bad so sad? I am talking the pros, the ones who get paid and have sponsors, not the amateurs. To me pros should have a whole different set of responsibilities.

A new Olympic event???
1000m freestyle, 200m Backstroke, followed by 135 miles of NASCAR racing. My guess is Tyler Clary for the win. With Katinka Hosszu a close second, because, of course she would do it too.

Until Brent Rushall comes up with a new training system, USRPD (Ultra Short Race Pace Driving). Then it’s Michael Andrew ftw.

The only way to get good at driving fast is to drive fast. If you can survive 200 mph in rush hour, you can survive a NASCAR race. If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball.

Actually, wrenches have very little in common with dodgeballs, so the ability to dodge a wrench would accordingly have little effect on the athlete’s ability to dodge a ball, if any. Again, the principle of specificity reigns supreme and the outdated methods of traditional dodgeball training are highlighted.
