Israeli 16-year old Anastasia Gorbenko was disqualified as the top seed in the women’s 200 IM on Friday morning at the World Junior Swimming Championships. She was the top seed coming into the event and one of 4 disqualifications called in prelims, including China’s Yixuan Chang and adding to a noteworthy no-show for Britain’s Honey Osrin.
Gorbenko was called for an illegal back-to-breast turn. Her Israeli teammate Lea Polonsky qualified 4th to the final in 2:15.10, and the top qualifier was American Jusstina Kozan in 2:12.83.
Earlier this year at the World Championships, when she was still only 15, Gorbenko set the Israeli National Record in the 200 IM in 2:11.92. Even at h er young age, she already holds or shares 9 Israeli Records, including the 50 back (28.21), 100 back (1:00.58), and 200 breast (2:28.78).
Gorbenko was entered in 8 events coming into the meet, but has scratched most of those races so far. Her only final to this point of the meet came in the 100 back, where she finished 7th in 1:01.79. Also on Friday morning, she qualified 6th through to the semi-finals in the women’s 50 backstroke.
That’s is the 3rd time that this has happened to her and always at that back to breast turn. Jr Euros at 2018, World’s qualification meet and now Jr Worlds. She is so young and talented, but this became an epidemic and she needs to work on it before the Olympics.

I know you’re trying to make a point, but don’t forget that 1) not everyone will get the joke, and 2) that she’s only 16.
of course nothing against her ever. She’s an amazing swimmer. Just highlighting how we shouldn’t rush to judge character based on disqualifications in a swim meet no matter who you are, that can happen to everybody and (yes I know Cody miller is a repeat offender and its not comparable.) Apologies !! I’m on 3 hours of sleep.
And 3) she didn’t purposely break a rule, after having done it several times over her career

I really respect the swimmers who sacrifice 0.5 seconds to do this transition so cleanly that they never risk this call.
I think coaches should not encourage this risky transition technique, it can back fire at inopportune times.
