Sun Yang Completes Distance Sweep on Day 8 of Chinese Nationals

2017 CHINESE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

On day 8 of the 2017 Chinese National Championships, Olympic champ Sun Yang finished off his sweep of the distance free races. Sun, the World Record holder in the event, clocked in at 15:04.15. That’s well off his record time of 14:31.02, but still good enough to win by almost 4 seconds. With that, he has golds in every freestyle race except the 50 free from this meet.

Since his absence from the final at 2015 Worlds, Sun hasn’t been performing up to his former standard in the mile. Last summer, he missed out on a chance to defend his Olympic title when he finished 16th in prelims with a 15:01.97.

Also completing sweeps today was Wang Shun, who swept the IM events, and Xu Jiayu, who swept the backstrokes. After winning the 200 IM and setting a National Record earlier in the meet, Shun captured the 400 IM title today in 4:12.65, making him the 6th fastest performer in the world this year. Jiayu, on the other hand, swept the backstrokes. He was just shy of his National Record from the semis, winning in 24.48.

On the women’s side, the 400 IM podium was without 2012 Olympic champ and former World Record holder Ye Shiwen. Though she swam in the final, she wound up a distant 5th in 4:49.63. Winning the event was Zhou Min, who put up the only sub-4:40 time to take the title in 4:37.65. It took a 4:43 to make the podium, as Wang Xinya (4:43.42) and Xu Danlu (4:43.55) rounded out the top 3.

Sun Yang definitely will swim the 800m as if he win he will 4 peats this event. Anyway he swim his 800m final less than an hour after completing his 100m semis in Qingdao, so I guess he can still dropped a couple of secs in Budapest whereby obviously he will not swim 100m.

Clearly Sun Yang looks done for the 1500 free. He will probably not try to swim that event in Budapest against Paltrinieri. But let’s see if he has the guts to swim the 800 free against both Italians and Horton.

How is this clown still allowed to swim? Please stay away from Budapest this summer and keep your drama with you. Let the deserving athletes shine.
