The Real Federacion Espanola de Natacion (RFEN) has renewed its contract with Speedo’s international arm until December 2017. This makes Speedo the “exclusive product and sportswear supplier” of Spanish Swimming for the next three-plus years.
Unlike the deals negotiated by USA Swimming and other major federations, this deal mandates that Spanish athletes compete in Speedo products when representing Spain, according to a spokesperson, though exact details of the deal were not disclosed.
“Speedo and the Spanish Swimming Federation have enjoyed a long relationship spanning almost two decades.. The Federation is home to some of the highest performing athletes in the world and we are proud to be able to support them at all their upcoming tournaments, including the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio.”
Spanish swimming, especially Spanish women’s swimming, is in arguably the most successful period of its history. As the host country at the 6-discipline 2013 World Aquatics Championships, they took home a whopping 12 medals. In addition to their expected success in synchro, Mireia Belmonte-Garcia won four medals at Worlds – the biggest haul ever by a Spanish swimmer.
This is coupled with improving depth in their youth ranks and a lot of broken National Records (age group and senior) in the last couple of seasons, as Spanish swimming continues to rise.
Thank goodness they will contune to wear speedos.
