South Dakota State claimed eight event titles, including both relays, en route to sweeping a women’s swimming and diving triangular from Northern State and Iowa Central Saturday night at the Stanley J. Marshall Center Pool.
The Jackrabbits evened their dual record at 2-2 on the young season by defeating Northern State, 118-75, and recording a 133-47 victory over Iowa Central.
SDSU opened the meet with the B 400-yard medley relay quartet of Sianne Downes, Morgan Nelson, Jenna Currier and Elisabeth Timmer recording a winning time of 3 minutes, 58.20 seconds.
Timmer and Downes were among the individual winners for the Jackrabbits, with Timmer leading the way with a pair of victories. The senior from Savaneta, Aruba, claimed the 100 butterfly in 58.90 seconds, then came back later in the meet to win the 500 freestyle in 5:20.14, 20 seconds ahead of her nearest competition.
Downes, meanwhile, captured the 100 backstroke in 57.51 seconds.
The Jackrabbits notched victories in three other freestyle events: Emma Bachelder in the 50 (:24.97 ), Gabriella Gnewuch in the 200 (1:59.55) and freshman Emily Shuttleworth in the 1,000 (11:01.51). SDSU claimed the top four spots in both the 50- and 1,000-yard races.
Bachelder added a runner-up finish in the 100 freestyle.
SDSU closed the meet with a victory in the 200 freestyle relay as the foursome of Emma Walz, Katie Pattee, Mia Pendleton and Grace Witherspoon teamed for a winning time of 1:39.73.
Men’s Recap
The South Dakota State men’s swimming and diving team wrapped up a successful opening weekend by defeating Iowa Central, 108-97, in dual action Saturday night at the Stanley J. Marshall Center Pool.
The Jackrabbits held the upper hand in three freestyle events to secure their second dual win in as many nights. Freshmen Jon Galles in the 200-yard freestyle and Jack Ellison in the 500 freestyle sparked the SDSU victory, with Galles leading an SDSU sweep of the top four spots in his event with a winning time of 1 minute, 45.36 seconds. He was followed by Alex Kraft (1:46.92), Ellison (1:49.48) and Matt Sorenson (1:49.67).
Ellison came back later in the dual to post his second win in the 500 freestyle in as many meets with a time of 4:53.20.
Sam Johnson added a victory in the 100 freestyle with a time of 47.48 seconds, while Galles took second in 47.89 seconds.
A third freshman, Aiden Carstensen, picked up his second win in a row in the 100 backstroke, clocking in at 52.17 seconds to edge teammate Rafael Negri (:53.29).
Carstensen and Galles teamed to make up one half of the Jackrabbits’ victorious 400 medley team, joining forces with Gavin Wheeler and Austin Smith for a winning time of 3:27.96.

The Jackrabbit women continue their competition-heavy early season with a Oct. 22 dual at Iowa State. Start time is set for 2 p.m.
Next action for the SDSU men is slated for Oct. 28, when the Jackrabbits travel to Minneapolis for a triangular against Minnesota and St. Thomas.
