In what was a very close final, Japan’s Shinri Shioura clocked a time of 46.59 in the men’s 100 freestyle to win silver in a new Asian Record. That swim lowers his previous record of 46.70, set at the 2014 Championships in Doha. It is also, of course, a new Japanese Record.
Lithuania’s Simonas Bilis won gold just one one-hundredth of a second ahead of Shioura in 46.58, setting a new Lithuanian Record. Bilis was 1st through 50m in 22.01, and Shioura was 2nd in 22.24. Shioura closed on Bilis coming home in 24.35, but the Lithuanian held on for the win. The bronze medal went to Australia’s Tommaso D’Orsogna in 46.70.
Shioura also swam the 100 IM and 50 free here in Windsor, winning bronze in the sprint IM event and placing 18th in the 50 free. He also won a bronze medal in the men’s 4×50 free relay.
