After the high school-aged athletes competed at the NCSA Spring Swimming Championships from March 18–22, the younger age groupers gathered at the same Rosen Aquatic and Fitness Center the following week for a competition of their own.
Swim Atlanta 12-year-old Parker Wheeler was a clear standout throughout the weekend, dominating the boys’ 12 & under age group. He won all ten of his individual events, and set Georgia State records en route to winning the 50 freestyle (22.58) and 200 butterfly (2:01.79).
In addition to those record-setting swims, Wheeler won the 100 free (49.36), 200 free (1:48.19), 50 back (25.93), 100 back (56.79), 50 fly (24.20), 100 fly (55.17), 100 IM (56.44), and 200 IM (2:04.82). While all of these were impressive wins, none were best times besides the 100 IM, where he set a new PB of 56.44. He already holds the state records in the 100 free, 200 free, 500 free, and 50 fly with his current career bests.
Julia Bak, a 14-year-old from QNS Aquatic Club, delivered an outstanding performance on the girls’ side, winning six individual events in the 13-14 age group. She touched 1st in the 50 free (23.46), 100 free (50.46), 50 back (25.33), 100 back (54.78), 50 fly (24.72), and 100 fly (55.41). While none of those swims were personal bests, Bak recorded best times in the 200 free (1:51.03) and 200 IM (2:05.24), taking 2nd in both.
Machine Aquatics’ Kennedy Masten, 12, won five events in the girls’ 12-and-under age group. She swept the backstroke races, going 25.92 in the 50, 56.44 in the 100, and 2:06.38 in the 200. The 50 and 200 times were personal bests, while she came just shy of her top mark in the 100, which stands at 55.70. Masten also finished 1st in the 50 fly (26.18) and 50 free (24.59), both in best times.
12-year-old Sara Young from Rockville Montgomery Swim Club grabbed five individual wins as well. She won the 100 free (53.43), 200 free (1:54.94), 500 free (5:05.99), 100 fly (58.30), and 200 fly (2:08.56), showcasing a wide-ranging ability in the freestyle races. Young’s winning times all represented new lifetime bests, with the exception of the 100 free, which rests at 53.35.
Young’s teammate, 12-year-old Brian Sunjaya, was another top performer. He swept all three breast distances in personal records, touching in 28.71 in the 50, 1:02.72 in the 100, and 2:19.80 in the 200.
Rockville swept all three scoring divisions, claiming 1st place in the girls’ division with 872 points, the boys’ division with 1462 points, and the combined standings with 2,334 points.
