NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Fairfield men’s and women’s swimming and diving took down Iona this weekend as the women won by a score of 150.5-140.5 and the men defeated the Gaels 145-135. This win marked the first time since 2012 that the men’s team knocked off Iona.
On the men’s side, the Stags started the day with a second-place finish in the 200 Yard Medley Relay as Will Robinson, Peter Sloan, Jordan Rahurahu, and Ian Nelson clocked in at 1:36.35. Erik Hren took the top spot in the 1000 Yard Freestyle with a final time of 9:42.71. He then placed first in the 100 Yard Freestyle at 47.73 and won the 500 Yard Freestyle with a time of 4:42.01. Peter Sloan won the 100 Yard Breaststroke clocking in at 58.69 and the 200 Yard Breaststroke with a time of 2:09.88. Evan Fair took home a first-place finish in the 200 Yard Individual Medley at 1:54.95 and finished second in the 200 Yard Backstroke (1:55.44). Jordan Rahurahu finished second in the 200 Yard Butterfly (1:55.92) and in the 100 Yard Butterfly (52.02). Peter Gori finished second in the 200 Yard Freestyle at 1:44.68 while Will Robinson placed second in the 100 Yard Backstroke at 52.95. Ian Nelson came in second place in the 50 Yard Freestyle (22.15). Rahurahu, Gori, Benjamin Kebbell, and Hren finished the day in second place in the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay with a final time of 3:12.24.
Samuel Tonole won both the 3 Meter and 1 Meter Diving with scores of 211.20 and 207.10 respectively.
“Today our men have seen their time in the summer and fall payoff” said Head Coach Anthony Bruno. “No secrets, just a lot of hard work and heart. There is still some ground to cover, but we’re ready to sprint to the finish.”
For the women, Alexandra Miko-Rydzaj, Colleen Young, Morgan Hansen, and Maria Nitti started the day with a first-place finish in the 200 Yard Medley Relay with a final time of 1:48.94. Sara Ostensen followed with a win in the 1000 Yard Freestyle clocking in at 10:46.44. Ostensen also won the 500 Yard Freestyle at 5:14.70. Alexandra Miko-Rydzaj took home a first-place finish in the 100 Yard Backstroke clocking in at 59.88. Colleen Young won both the 100 Yard Breaststroke (1:08.09) and the 200 Yard Breaststroke (2:26.98). Young also placed second in the 200 Yard Individual Medley (2:15.23). Morgan Hansen won the 200 Yard Butterfly with a final time of 2:09.88 and placed second in the 100 Yard Butterfly at 59.29. Maria Nitti won the 50 Yard Freestyle with a time of 24.48. Nitti also won the 100 Yard Freestyle at 53.79. Samantha D’Alessandro, Rachel Landry, Nitti, and Ostensen came in second place in the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay with a time of 3:39.25.
Erin Wind won the 1 Meter Diving with a score of 162.40 while Caitlin Campbell came in second (137.30). Campbell also won the 3 Meter Diving with a final score of 196.05.
“I could not be prouder of our group today” said Bruno. “Any time you go into a hostile environment and find a way to win you need to credit the leaders on the team. Our women have gotten everyone’s best shot this year and today was no different! Our Lady Stags answered the call and we’ll keep building toward the MAAC Championships.”
Fairfield will return to the pool as the travel to Kingston, Rhode Island to take part in the URI Invitational on January 24 starting at 5 P.M.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY – The Iona College swim team lost to MAAC foe Fairfield earlier today. The men lost by a final score of 145-135, while the women fell 150.5-140.5. Prior to today’s meet, the program honored seniors Amanda Agostino, Alexandria Bay, Ashley Cave, Alyssa Chain, Anna Desiderio, Simone Sturrup, Matt Anderson, Alex Cheruk, Brian Connors, Jakub Korek, Shane Syron and James Whaley.
For Iona, Willow Lopez-Silvers, Daniel Hadary, Spencer Moran, Conor Mullin, Meghan Pattison, Isabelle Pabon and Chain all notched individual wins on the afternoon. Hadary (50 and 200-freestyle), Moran (100 and 200-backstroke) and Mullin (100 and 200-butterfly) all secured multiple wins.
The Iona men put together two relay-winning quartets on the afternoon. Moran, Jackson Madonia, Whaley and Mullin teamed up to take the top spot in the 200-medley relay and the foursome of Aidan Holbrook, Anderson, Moran and Hadary grabbed a first-place finish in the 400-freestyle relay.
On the women’s side, Katherine Lee, Lopez-Silvers, Sturrup and Kate Flynn won the 400-freestyle relay.
The two teams return to action on Wednesday, January 22 when they travel a short distance to face off with Fordham. The meet will take place at 5:00 p.m. in the Lombardi Center Pool.
