Open water specialist Claire Stuhlmacher has announced her verbal commitment to the United States Naval Academy, beginning in the fall of 2024.
Stuhlmacher currently swims year-round with NOVA of Virginia Aquatics in Richmond, Virginia, while attending Douglas S. Freeman High School in Henrico, Virginia.

Stuhlmacher was recently named to the Open Water National Junior Team. She placed 2nd at Open Water Nationals in the Junior 7.5k event, landing her a spot on the 2022 FINA World Junior Open Water team. At World Juniors in the Seychelles, Stuhlmacher placed just off the podium in 4th in the 7.5k.
In the pool, Stuhlmacher is also a distance specialist. At the Futures Championship in North Carolina this summer, she earned as high as a 6th place finish in the 800m free with a personal best time of 9:09.15. She also recorded a personal best in the 400 IM in a time trial, clocking a 5:07.83.

Most recently, Stuhlmacher competed at the NC Star Triad Tropic meet this past weekend where she notched personal bests in the 100 breast (1:09.15), 200 fly (2:08.70), and 200 IM (2:10.08).
The Navy women won the Patriot League team title at last season’s conference meet, out-scoring 2nd place Bucknell by 396 points. They also won in 2020, with 2021’s meet being canceled due to COVID-19.
Stuhlmacher would have been the team’s 3rd-fastest 1650 swimmer last season. Navy’s distance squad last year was led by current juniors Cameron Horner and Rachel Schlemmer, who clocked 16:40.18 and 16:53.93 at their conference meet, picking up 3rd and 4th place, respectively. This season, Horner has been as fast as 17:04.06, while freshman Sarah Eldridge has clocked a 17:28.61.
Stuhlmacher is joined by Florida native Brynn Stoneburg in the Navy’s class of 2028. Stoneburg has a rangy freestyle, and swims everything from the 50 free up to the mile, where she owns a best time of 16:53.98.
