How It Happened
New Hampshire won six of the final eight events to pull away from Rhode Island for a 166-134 victory Saturday afternoon.

The meet went back-and-forth through the early races, and the teams were separated by just one point through the first eight events of the day. While UNH held a slight 76-75 lead, Rhode Island had won four of the first eight events. The Rams had a 1-2 finish in the 1650-yard freestyle (Addi Wood) plus victories in the 100 breaststroke (Hannah Benavides) , 200 butterfly (Julianna Tyler) and the 1-meter dive (Lily Hsu) to keep things tight.

However, the Wildcats began to establish their lead by sweeping the top three spots in the 200 backstroke, outscoring Rhody 16-3 in the event. Benavides got her second victory of the day for URI when she won the 200 breaststroke, pulling the Rams back within 113-97. UNH responded with wins in the 500 freestyle and 100 butterfly to take a commanding 138-110 lead with three events remaining.

Hsu won the 3-meter dive to complete a personal sweep of the diving events, but the Rams were unable to close the gap.

“This was our first meet back in the new year and we were excited to see the team compete against UNH after two tough weeks of training,” Rhode Island head coach Lilli Deering said. “The team showed up, and we had a lot of really great swims. It should give them a lot of confidence in the work they are putting in and will continue to put in over the next few weeks as we get ready for the Atlantic 10 Championship.”
