National team member and USC team captain, Kendyl Stewart, will be featured in ESPN The Magazine’s December 8th Big Money Issue. She had a big summer, winning both the 50 and 100 butterfly at the US National Championships in Irvine, CA, earning herself a spot on the 2015 World Championship’s roster. In the article, Kendyl is asked about her typical expenses, along with any dependents she may have. She jokes that her only dependent is her cat, but there’s no need to worry; she is only a 5 on the 1-10 crazy cat lady scale.
From Monday, October 25th to Friday, October 29th, Stewart recorded and commented on her daily expenses. Many associate being an elite athlete with living large; “popping bottles and flying private jets … to dinner,” as ESPN writer Sam Alipour puts it. “Turns out, it’s lots of Chipotle and online shopping. [The stars] really are just like us!”
Stewart says her most costly habit is eating, and that she usually spends most of her money on rent and food. As a full scholarship athlete, Stewart receives a small stipend from USC for her rent and food. She added, “I also get grants from USA Swimming and USOC — recently, I got a $6K check from USA Swimming, which is for basic necessities, and $10K from USOC, which is less restrictive.”
Her five day diary recorded other purchases for holiday activities with the team, a new pair of fins, make-up, and a few other random expenses. When compared to the other five athletes, Kendyl had the fourth most expensive week out of the 6 selected athletes, spending $1,488. This list is slightly skewed, however, because some athletes paid rent during their week, while others did not. Ryan Hunter-Reay, had the most expensive week, spending $15,887. He had several other expenses that many of the other athletes did not, such as travel for him and his family.
Of the featured athletes, Bogut had the highest yearly salary at $14 million. The athlete with the lowest salary was Tyler LaTorre, the farm league baseball player, who was making $5,000/month while playing (5 months). The only athlete that did not have their yearly income listed was Kendyl Stewart.
