Madi Wilson Hits 24.04 50 Free PB Less Than 2 Weeks After COVID-19 Diagnosis

2021 FINA WORLD CUP – BERLIN

During day 1 of the FINA World Cup in Berlin, Germany, Madi Wilson threw down a 24.04 for third place in the women’s 50 freestyle final. That swim for Wilson marks an improvement upon her own PB in the event of 24.18 which she first set in November 2020. Wilson equaled that former PB just a few weeks ago at Match 4 of the International Swimming League’s third season. Prior to that, Wilson swam a 24.19 at Match 4.

What makes Wilson’s 24.04 best time most notable is that it has been less than 2 weeks since she announced that she had been diagnosed with COVID-19. Wilson was subsequently hospitalized and only got back in the pool on September 27 which was 4 days before setting this new PB.

Wilson candidly shared her experience with COVID-19 on her Instagram account and said that believes the fact that she was double vaccinated prior to contracting the virus mitigated her symptoms.

Wilson will be racing in the FINA World Cup for the month of October and will then join LA Current teammate Anastasia Gorbenko in Israel for a 2-week training period before they travel to Eindhoven, Netherlands to take part in the 2021 ISL play-offs.

Prior to her COVID-19 diagnosis Wilson was one of LA Current’s highest season 3 scorers thus far, having placed 1st in the 200 freestyle at Match 2, 4, and 5, in the 400 freestyle at Match 4, and the 100 freestyle at Match 5.

During her 24.04 swim in Berlin, Wilson was out-touched by fellow Australian sprinter Emma McKeon who won the event in a 23.56, while Sweden’s Michelle Coleman swam a 23.88 for second place. That swim also marks a new PB for Emma McKeon, improving upon the 23.60 she posted at ISL Match 6 while swimming for London Roar.

McKeon’s 0.04-second improvement gets her even closer to Cate Campbell‘s 23.19 Australian record in the event which she set at the 2017 Australian Short Course Championships. As for Coleman, her 23.88 is a bit slower than her own best time in the event of 23.59 from back in 2019, as well as Sarah Sjostrom‘s Swedish record in the event of 23.00.

Why was she hospitalized for COVID, if she had a mild breakthrough case? Was it just a precaution? It is uncommon for someone that is fully vaccinated be hospitalized for COVID especially when they are young and healthy.

https://swimswam.com/madi-wilson-on-the-mend-after-covid-positive-plans-to-race-fina-world-cup/

if you click her name a few articles with more details pop up but she had some slightly above mild symptoms it seems and it was precaution.

I wonder if the COVID taper will be a thing, time off seemed to help her rest up a bit.

Clearly it helped Tom Dean swim the fastest 200 free we’ve seen in 8 years.
