The top sprint backstroker in Jamaican history, Tim Wynter has verbally committed to swim for the USC Trojans.
Wynter holds Jamaican national records in both the 50 and 100 backstrokes in both short course and long course. He’s a graduate of the Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, but has been training and competing for the South Florida Aquatic Club with coach Chris Anderson.
Wynter was actually a member of the high school class of 2014, and was originally listed among Duke’s recruiting class last year.
But Wynter did not compete for Duke this season, and has now told SwimSwam he’ll be joining USC.

USC has had great success with backstrokers as of late, turning Luca Spinazzola into a multi-year All-American, and currently feature Estonian national Ralf Tribuntsov, who nearly won the Pac-12 100 back title over Cal superstar Ryan Murphy.
Wynter comes in with a wealth of international experience for Jamaica, including a semi-final appearance at the 2013 FINA Junior World Championships. He’s also competed at the 2014 Commonwealth Games and the 2014 Youth Olympic Games, plus the 2012 Short Course World Championships.
as a former teammate of his, I can attest to the 48.73 in the 100. he dod that at the 2014 Division One New England Prep School Swimming achampionships prelims. He decided to ease up at finals in order to prepare for the 4×100 free relay.
Interesting recruit and probably the most traveled. Native of Jamaica, prepped in Massachusetts, originally signed with Duke in North Carolina last year, now swims in Florida and headed west to SoCal. USC has had a number of Jamaican athletes over the years, but all have been in the sport Jamaica is most renowned for — track & field — rather than swimming.
Last year’s NISCA 100 backstroke rankings had Wynter at 48.73 which was #20 among the backstrokers for the 2014 season. That’s better than the 49.75 shown above. Wynter definitely has a big upside.
